“I am going to surprise everybody”: LB Bobby Wagner will make the Seattle Seahawks regret releasing him

Bobby Wagner

Bobby Wagner finds himself in a unique spot, the linebacker is on a different team after a long time, and he is in an environment that is completely the opposite of what Seattle was. Wagner is now on the Los Angeles Rams, a city and organization completely different from Seattle. Though as a defensive player, he could not be more delighted that he would get to solidify the deadly defense of the Rams, he is still not happy with the way things ended at Seattle.

The linebacker called his offseason bittersweet but he is excited for what the future holds. That is understandable, Wagner was on Seattle for an entire decade. He had reportedly made it clear that if he was not going to be a Seahawk this season, the only other team he would be willing to play was his hometown team, the LA Rams.

“I didn’t want to leave Seattle”: Bobby Wagner wanted to remain a Seahawk

Bobby Wagner

Wagner recently spoke to Seattle Times about how things ended for him in Seattle and his relationship with the team after they released him. He had this to say, “There are still feelings (about being released), at the end of the day, I have a different perspective. I think my opinion on it would have been different if I ended up somewhere else. But to have the opportunity to go home and play not far from my family. Like I haven’t played this close to my family since high school,” Wagner said that though things did not go his way in Seattle, he now gets to play closer to home.

Bobby Wagner did not want to leave Seattle but if he was, there was only one other place he was willing to go to. Home. “I didn’t want to leave Seattle. But if I was going to leave Seattle, home was the next best thing for me and so being able to be home, like I’m at peace with the situation. But still, any competitor is looking forward to going back to the place that you played that they felt like you didn’t have nothing left and proving them wrong,” Wagner concludes.

The LB was released on the 8th of March, hours after the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Seattle appeared to be letting go of all its experienced veterans in what some speculate to be rebuilding. The LA Rams jumped at this and signed Bobby Wagner to a five-year, $50 million deal within moments.

The linebacker is optimistic about his performance this season. The move to LA is a great opportunity for him to consistently visit his family and be able to perform on the field. He is also looking to prove that he can solidify the Rams’ defense further.

“I think that I’m in a better position to make plays and I think I’m going to have more opportunities to do some of the things that I was doing early on in my career. I think I’m going to surprise everybody but myself,” the LB seems to indirectly be taking shots at his former team and other critics who claim that he is done.

The LB does not wish to change his official residence anytime soon. Though he is on a different team and in an entirely different city, he has not lost contact with the community of Seattle. He has been helping the community overcome the adversities imposed by the pandemic.

“I just kind of wanted to show the city that had loved me for 10 years some love before I left and kind of let them know that although I’m not playing for the Seahawks that I am not removing myself from this community,” Wagner adds and expresses his intent to be a part of the Seattle community forever. The LB will always be grateful for the time he spent in the city.

“When I played in Seattle, the whole goal was like to leave your mark, I didn’t want to just be there, and as soon as I retired everybody forgot that I played there. I think I’m always grateful for my time and the energy that I gave to the city. I feel like I gave them everything that I have. I felt like we had a lot of good years. I was committed to not only the organization but to the city. So it’s unfortunate that I won’t be one of those guys who played their whole career with one team but I’m excited to be able to go home and play in front of my family,” Wagner concludes.
