Despite being in the NFL for just two years, Brock Purdy has achieved accomplishments that would easily make him Hall of Fame worthy. Not only did he lead the team straight to the Super Bowl as the NFC champion, but also set a single-season franchise record of 4,280 yards.

The 2022 Mr. Irrelevant turned himself into a coveted MVP finalist this season. But there are still people within the NFL, who remain skeptical about the young quarterback’s abilities. Even though the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback can hardly be blamed for the Super Bowl LVIII loss, he still couldn’t earn the trust of many.

Being frustrated by the skepticism surrounding the quarterback’s abilities, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk finally raised his voice in support of Purdy. He emphasized that, regardless of how his contract negotiation turns out, he would still refer to Purdy as an ‘underdog’ in the NFL. Aiyuk said, during his recent appearance on ‘The Nightcap’ podcast:

They gonna take to the last moment possible to say 'alright we gonna give him his credit. But we cool with that. We cool with that. I feel like he's an underdog. Myself, I feel like I'm an underdog. But you can't hold an underdog down for too long. You can't hold him down. No matter how hard you try, you ain't gonna hold him down.

Part of the reason why Aiyuk feels emphatic towards Purdy is because they stand nearly in the same position. But the difference is that the quarterback is experiencing the doubts and skepticism outside the franchise, and the receiver within. Aiyuk also said that he would continue praising Purdy no matter what he does.

49ers’ John Lynch quashes Brandon Aiyuk trade talk

After the Super Bowl game in early February, Aiyuk’s departure from the Niners appeared more evident given both his girlfriend and best friend posted about it. However, at the NFL league meetings held last Monday, General Manager John Lynch dismissed the rumors.

Not only did he dismiss the speculations of Aiyuks’ potential trade, but he also hinted that the 49ers have already begun talking about an extension with the receiver and his representatives.

I promise you nothing's going on there. We're actively talking with Brandon trying to figure something out.

When the rumors began, many teams across the league reached out to the 49ers to discuss a potential trade deal for Aiyuk. But Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan turned down all the offers and are now looking up a favorable deal for now.
