Brandon Aiyuk is never afraid to speak his mind. According to general manager John Lynch, the San Francisco 49ers are trying their best to find common ground with Aiyuk.

Lynch on Monday spoke with the reporters, conveying that the San Francisco 49ers have not discussed the possibility of trading Aiyuk. Instead, he wants the 2020 first-round pick to remain in the Bay Area and continue with his fifth-year option.

What did John Lynch say about Brandon Aiyuk?

One of the key figures in the 49ers push for the Super Bowl last season was Brandon Aiyuk’s output. The 26-year-old had a career-defining campaign with 75 catches for 1342 yards and 7 touchdowns in 16 games.

His rookie contract ended with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. People tend to forget that the 49ers had already agreed to activate Aiyuk’s fifth-year option before the start of the 2023 season. In that regard, he will earn $14.124 million in 2024.

The primary conundrum is that he wants to secure a long-term extension before the season begins. When the reporters asked Lynch about the situation, he gave more clarity,

We are actively talking with Brandon, trying to figure something out. We're talking with his guys, trying to talk about some parameters of some things.
Lynch said

Lynch refused to elaborate on what sort of conversation they had with Aiyuk’s camp. In the meantime, Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh-area radio station 93.7 The Fan reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in trading for the Arizona State graduate, per the 49ers web zone.

I promise you, nothing's going on there.
Lynch chimed in

In his conclusion, Lynch complimented Aiyuk for being a fine player for the 49ers. He emphasized that it’s impossible to keep everybody around for as long as they can. However, Aiyuk is one of those few he would love to have in the 49ers locker room.

If a trade doesn’t materialize, fans can expect this to continue well within the OTAs and perhaps even during the preseason. As Lynch mentioned, signing every player from last season is out of the question. They have already renewed George Kittle, Nick Bosa, and Deebo Samuel‘s contracts. As a result, they are low on the salary cap.
