The Los Angeles Chargers have finally fired their head coach Brandon Staley after a poor season. Chargers’ dismal loss to the Las Vegas Raiders was the final nail in the coffin for Staley as he led the team to a 5-9 record through 15 weeks of the season. The Chargers trailed 0-42 by halftime and were out of the game in the first two quarters of the game.
Staley though, was summoned to give a halftime interview with his team nearly out of the game. To his credit, he stood by the sidelines and had a quick interview with NFL’s sideline reporter, Kaylee Hartung. She asked Staley to describe his team’s first-half performance to which Staley said:
This wasn’t good enough. That wasn’t us out there. You know, did not come ready to play.Brandon Staley to Kaylee Hartung

The game’s play-by-play announcer, Al Michaels praised Staley for giving the interview despite his team’s poor performance. He said from his booth:
Appreciate the fact that he even stopped by for that interview.Al Michaels from his booth
Kirk Herbstreit replied:
No doubt.
Michaels concluded by saying:
A lot of guys wouldn’t.
Staley’s Chargers played a better second half, but eventually lost the game, 63-21.
Staley joined the Chargers in January 2021 as he replaced the team’s then coach Anthony Lynn. In his two-and-a-half seasons with the Chargers, Staley led them to a 24-24 record and made the playoffs only once. They lost that playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars by blowing a 27-point lead.
Los Angeles Chargers fire HC Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco after their loss to the Raiders
The Los Angeles Chargers’ HC Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco were under a lot of pressure from the first weeks of the season. They were having a difficult season with Staley receiving a lot of criticism for his coaching. The Chargers’ 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday turned out to be the duo’s final game with the team as they were both fired following the loss.

Chargers’ owner Dean Spanos said:
I want to thank Tom and Brandon for their hard work, dedication and professionalism, and wish both them and their great families nothing but the best. These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly -- especially when you consider the number of people they impact. We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need new vision.
The Chargers are 5-9 after 15 weeks of the season. Their franchise quarterback was recently ruled out for the season due to a finger injury and the team is nowhere near the playoffs in a tight AFC. They will hope to end the season on a positive note with Giff Smith as their interim head coach.
