The Denver Broncos went big in the 2022 offseason and signed then-Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. He was one of the best QBs in the league at that time and the move made sense for both parties. The Broncos were looking for a QB and Wilson was looking for a change of scenery. Everything was in place for the Broncos to have a great year but the 2022 season turned out to be one of the worst in the Broncos’ history.

Fast forward to 2023 and then HC Nathaniel Hackett is gone and he is replaced by Super Bowl-winning HC Sean Payton. He had some hard advice for their starting QB recently as, according to ESPN, Payton told Wilson to “stop kissing babies” as he is “not running for public office”. Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre believes that Seattle trading Wilson had more to do with his brand focus than his on-field play.

“There’s a reason why Seattle got rid of him or parted ways with him. It’s not that his playing declined, he’s still got a lot left in the tank. That doesn’t mean it will materialize.” Favre said on Jason Whitlock‘s show Fearless. “If he is preoccupied with his brand during football season, that’s hurting everyone else.” Wilson is married to singer and actress Ciara and Favre feels like that brings a lot of off-field attention on the QB.

Wilson won a Super Bowl in Seattle and was considered as a top QB in the league. After a disastrous first season with the Denver Broncos, Wilson will look to bounce back this season with a great HC in Payton calling plays for him. They begin their season against the Las Vegas Raiders tomorrow.

Russell Wilson had a horrific first season with the Denver Broncos. The former Super Bowl-winning QB looked like a completely different quarterback in his debut season with the Broncos. After a terrible 5-12 season, the Broncos fired HC Nathaniel Hackett and hired former Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton.

Payton would look to do with Wilson what he did with Drew Brees in the later stages of his career. They have reportedly developed a good relationship and they will hope that it translates on the field this season. The Broncos have injury concerns to begin the season with star WR Jerry Juedy and CB Patrick Surtain II dealing with injuries.

Wilson has been under criticism, especially from his coach, for his leadership style and off-field brand focus. Payton and Wilson will both look to deliver for the Broncos this season and take the team to the playoffs. They play the Las Vegas Raiders in week 1.
