Back in 2020, Packers’ legendary quarterback Brett Favre‘s name was mentioned in Mississippi State’s embezzlement case. Around $1.1 million was paid to a company owned by Favre for two speaking appearances to be made by the signal-caller. However, Favre never made those appointments, and it was stated that he intended to return the entire money back.
The 53-year-old was accused of diverting money meant for the welfare of Mississippi State residents and immediately returned $500k in May 2000 and the $600k balance in October 2021. But Favre is yet to pay $228k interest as per the Mississippi auditor’s office. Additionally, the Mississippi Department of Human Resources is now demanding the former quarterback pay an additional $5 million for allocating the anti-poverty funds to construct a volleyball field for his alma mater University of Southern Mississippi.
When such a celebrated quarterback is involved in something big, analysts are bound to talk and guestimate what would’ve happened. Shannon Sharpe, on Undisputed, and Pat McAfee, on his show, dissected the scam and alleged that Brett Favre was aware of what he was doing and called him “Sleazeball” and said that he was aware of what he was doing.

Brett Favre filed a defamation lawsuit against Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe
Brett Favre immediately sued Shannon Sharpe and Pat McAfee for defamation. The former All-Pro punter wasn’t fazed when slapped with a defamation suit by Favre’s lawyers and said, “Let’s ride this f**ker.” Shannon Sharpe, on the other hand, has been mum about the whole case and hasn’t addressed anything regarding to it on his show.
Super Bowl XXXI champion’s lawyer Eric Herschmann while talking with The Daily Mail, said that the lawsuit against Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe is an easy win for him. “We think it’s a slam dunk. Pat McAfee keeps talking about it. In all of my years as an attorney and being a prosecutor previously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a defendant build a case against themselves,” Herschmann said.
“His defense was, ‘Oh, I threw in the word “allegedly”‘ but two things is; the things that we cite, he didn’t throw in the world ‘allegedly,’ and secondly if he did any research or had a lawyer looking, that’s not really a defense.” If McAfee is indeed digging himself into a hole he can’t get out of, why would Eric warn him against it? Maybe he is hoping for another reaction from the former punter, which will strengthen the case against him.
Anyway, Brett Favre did a big mistake by filing the defamation suit because now his legacy is going to be turned down and his name will be dragged through the mud to prove if he did commit the welfare scam or not. Maybe by filing a lawsuit for defamation of his name, Favre has inadvertently done the same thing. Let’s see if this case is a ‘slam dunk’ or not.
