Brock Purdy has become the unexpected savior for the San Francisco 49ers. The 262nd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft has lived up to his moniker of Mr. Irrelevant and helped the 49ers stay atop the NFC West with a record of 5-3 this season. However, he has had a rough patch lately as the team has lost 3 straight games and he is being blamed for the losses.
Former 49ers QB Alex Smith, who was also drafted by the team nearly two decades ago with the first pick, came to Brock Purdy’s defense. He dubbed the criticism of the quarterback as “Absolutely nonsense” as he does not deserve to be critiqued this hard.
Smith’s criticism stems from the fact that the San Francisco 49ers never expected Brock Purdy to become the team’s starting quarterback in the first place. He is well on his way to establishing himself as the team’s franchise quarterback.
The former quarterback defended him on SiriusXM NFL Radio and stated that:
The talk of Brock Purdy being the problem is absolutely nonsense. As bad as he’s been in the last three weeks, which again, this is a guy that didn’t throw an interception in the first five weeks, yes he’s thrown five in the last three weeks.
Smith went on to praise his style of play.
Brock Purdy has already surpassed expectations of the 49ers
Brock Purdy has proven that his run last season was not a fluke and that he can indeed be the man the team needs him to be. The team’s three-game losing streak is the first speed bump that he has hit in his NFL career and despite his performance, the 49ers remain atop their division.
Critics have been shocked that Purdy has managed to play at such a high level and have been waiting for him to fail. His first bad stretch in the NFL and they have all come out swinging at him. However, Alex Smith will not be jumping onto that bandwagon.
He is not the problem. When you turn on the tape, this guy routinely makes ridiculous plays in the passing game look routine. Exactly that. He does it week in and week out.
The former NFL quarterback believes that when Purdy plays, it is hard to tell that this guy is playing in his second year in the NFL as he makes it look like he is a six or seven-year veteran who has been doing this for a while. All Purdy needs to do is help the team return to their winning ways and the critics will go back into their shells. The team faces off against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
