With just four minutes left in the first half, the San Francisco 49ers fans had a heart-to-mouth moment. Quarterback Brock Purdy, following a challenge, went down and stayed down.
On 2nd and 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, Purdy took the snap and scanned downfield, looking for teammates. What he did not realize was that Arizona Blitz was closing the pocket on the 23-year-old.
Outside linebacker Dennis Gardeck saw the opportunity for a hit on Purdy and went for it. He did not manage to get the sack, but he landed a successful tackle. After the dust settled down, the 49ers saw their quarterback lying on the back with his hands on the face mask.
The medical staff rushed to check up on him. After a brief pause in the play, Purdy got up and walked toward the blue tent. On his way to the doctors, fans inside the University of Phoenix Stadium were chanting “Pur-dy! Pur-dy! Pur-dy!” for their local Iowa boy.
Brock Purdy revealed how it felt after the hit from the Cardinals player
Sam Darnold came on and was in the game for three plays. Purdy returned to take charge and lead the 49ers to a 45-29 victory. He finished the night with 16/25 for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns, further increasing his chances of becoming the MVP in 2023.
In the post-match press conference, the former Cyclones player spoke about his injury.
I’ve never had a stinger before. So when I got hit, I probably could have popped up if someone grabbed my arm and pulled me up. This was my first time having it. I just laid there for a sec. and sort of let it calm down. And then I was able to get up and go to the tent, and then from there I got better. Literally, as time went on, it just started to go away. That was why I was able to go back in there mid-drive.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who had 4 catches for 48 yards and 2 touchdowns, claimed that he was a little shaken up seeing Purdy on the ground.
The feeling was a little different for me. He was down, and I was standing over him, and I was like, ‘Bro. What is wrong with you? What is going on?Deebo Samuel
He calmed down after Purdy told him that it was “just a stinger.”
He’s like, ‘I got a little stinger.’ So I was like, all right. I knew he was coming back in the game, so I wasn’t too worried about it.
That should be music to the ears of the 49ers fans. They need a healthy Brock Purdy because up next, it’s the Baltimore Ravens (11-3) at Levi’s Stadium.
