The Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy has defied all odds and has reached the Super Bowl in just his second year in the league. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback had a star-studded cast helping him to achieve this feat, but he was still one of the major reasons for their success this year. Amidst this, the former New England Patriots QB Tom Brady showers Purdy with high praise for reaching the Super Bowl.
During a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Let’s Go podcast, the former Patriots QB praised Purdy for the 49ers’ remarkable comeback victory against the Detroit Lions.
Done a great job ... Yesterday, I thought he played so well in the second half. He made some big plays with his feet, moving the ball down the field, and [I] thought that he led the team to a great victory. So, I think he's done terrific.Tom Brady said on Let’s Go podcast
Purdy had an awful start to the game as he only registered 93 passing yards along with 1 interception in the first half. As a result, the Niners found themselves trailing by 17 points at halftime. However, the second-year QB turned things around in the third and fourth quarters as he excelled both in passing and ground game.
In the second half, Purdy registered 174 passing yards and 1 passing TD. Furthermore, he also extended plays with his legs and rushed for 48 yards. His clean game in the third and fourth quarters led to the Niners erasing their deficit and securing a 34-31 victory over the Detroit-based football team. In his first full season as the starter, Purdy led the Niners to the Super Bowl and silenced many of his critics.
Tom Brady knows Brock Purdy has a chip on his shoulder
Just like Tom Brady, the 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy also entered the league with a chip on his shoulder. Brady was the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, while Purdy was the dead last pick in 2022.
Despite being overlooked in the draft, Brady went on to appear in 10 Super Bowls, winning seven of them. Meanwhile, Purdy is just getting started as he has already reached his first Super Bowl in his second year in the league.
During a recent episode of ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show, the 3-time league MVP shared how being a late-round pick might fuel Purdy’s desire to achieve greatness.
I think Brock's done a great job with the opportunity. He got it, and he's taken advantage of it. He was a late-round pick. I know he's got a chip on his shoulder, and he wants to go out there and prove every day that he's the right fit for that team.Tom Brady said on The Pat McAfee Show
Nonetheless, Purdy does have a lot to gain from a Super Bowl win. If he can lead his team to a victory in the much-anticipated game against the Kansas City Chiefs, he can silence many critics around the league.
