Brock Purdy pips Patrick Mahomes to come out as the favorite to become the MVP this season
Purdy currently has the best passer rating of any quarterback in the league.

With just one month into the NFL season, Brock Purdy‘s consistently match-winning performances have thrown him into the MVP of the season mix. Even though there are still doubts among analysts and fans alike over his pedigree, his stats are even better than those of last year’s winner, Patrick Mahomes.
One might make the case that Purdy might not even be the favorite to bag the Best Player award at the San Francisco 49ers. That accolade could eventually go to running back Christian McCaffrey. However, the awards themselves, criteria, and history are different. For the last 10 years, the MVP award in the NFL has gone to a quarterback.
With that piece of trivia on Purdy’s side, it’s safe to say he will be in the mix one way or another. He got off to another blemish-free season, completing 72.1 percent of his throws, averaging 9.4 yards per attempt, and racking up a quarterback rating of 123.1. This is mostly due to throwing nine touchdowns and no interceptions.
However, the most eye-catching part is that the 23-year-old is still unbeaten in the 49ers shirt after starting 10 games. That remarkable streak began last season until he was off the roster due to injury, and it has continued in 2023. The onus is on his shoulder to keep performing on every matchday.
Where does Brock Purdy stand compared to Patrick Mahomes in the MVP column?
There’s still a lot of football left to be played this season. The NFL has only entered October, and it won’t declare any player an MVP just after five games. But Brock Purdy has a legitimate case of being one of the front-runners alongside Patrick Mahomes.
According to the latest FOX Sports power rankings, Purdy has the third-best odds (+600) to win the MVP in 2023. According to linebacker Fred Warner, Purdy brings confidence to the 49ers locker room, and everything starts with him. It was backed by runningback McCaffrey in an interview with NBC.
Mahomes, on the other hand, is having a relatively quiet season despite winning the last five matches. The Super Bowl winner recorded his worst outing in the last game against the Denver Broncos. Still, the 5-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 1593 yards for 11 touchdowns with a 95.7 QB rating (worst in his career).
Let’s roll back time a bit. Matt Ryan was voted the best player in the league in 2016. The former Atlanta Falcons QB had only a 69.9 passer rating, which is lower than where Brock Purdy is at the moment. But the thing is, he has to continuously perform at the same level until the end of the season. Then maybe ‘Mr. Irrelvant’ would become an NFL MVP.
