Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are currently preparing to take on their NFC West division rivals Arizona Cardinals in their week 15 matchup. Amidst this, Purdy became one of the most talked about players in the league among fans and experts because of Cam Newton‘s comments about him simply being a game manager.
Ahead of the game, Purdy was asked about his opinions on Newton’s comments about him during the press conference on Wednesday. Purdy declined to answer.
I don’t know. I don’t want to comment on that. Like I said, I’m playing quarterback, trying to win games and we’ll see at the end of all of it.Purdy said in the press conference
The term game manager undermined Purdy’s abilities to elevate the players around him. He is currently one of the frontrunners to win the prestigious NFL MVP award, but Newton still brushed off his abilities and labeled him simply as a game manager during a recent episode of his 4th and 1 podcast.
He's managing the game. And if we were to put that in its own right as game managers: Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa. Jared Goff. And really, Dak Prescott. These are game managers. They're not difference makers.Newton said
Funnily enough, 3 of 4 quarterbacks Newton mentioned are currently frontrunners to bag the NFL MVP award for the ongoing season. Nonetheless, Purdy indeed has a lot of great offensive weapons around him. But, one can’t punish a player just because he has a good team around him.
Purdy doesn’t have many flashy plays and is not a dual-threat quarterback, but currently, he is certainly one of the top quarterbacks in the league and certainly deserves some respect.
Cam Newton doubles down on his Brock Purdy take despite criticism
Newton’s comments about Brock Purdy went viral and became a topic to discuss among experts and fans. Many criticized Newton for underplaying the abilities of four talented quarterbacks.
Amidst the heavy backlash, Newton doubled down on his take and said organizations are not looking to find the next Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, or Dak Prescott, but are looking to find the next Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
However, he did say that the term game manager is not a negative connotation. He further came clean saying that by referring to certain guys as game managers, he is not saying that those QBs are not capable of making some great plays. But, fans refused to buy that explanation and continued to criticize Newton for his take.
