Brock Purdy was a revelation for the 49ers last season. The 199th draft pick surpassed all expectations and lead the team in the playoffs as QB Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo were injured.
Mr. Irrelevant was the most important player in the 49ers squad. However, he suffered a gruesome injury during the playoff game against the Eagles and badly broke his elbow. This resulted in him being benched and the 49ers losing the game alongside ending their Super Bowl hopes.
However, things look bright for the young QB who has just gone through an elbow injury and is expected to start throwing in about 3 months’ time. Purdy’s surgery happened quite recently under the guidance of specialist Keith Meister. Meister conducted an Internal Brace repair to Purdy’s right elbow.
The surgery was performed in Dallas after consultation with the 49ers QB. However, his surgery was scheduled for 22nd Feb, but the swelling on his hand made it impossible to conduct the surgery.
It is stated that a 6-month recovery window is needed for surgery of this magnitude. However, it is believed that Purdy will make a quick recovery as his elbow is repaired and not reconstructed. Regardless, the 49ers were in turmoil throughout the entire time and didn’t want to lose their most talented QB for a longer time. The reports have been extremely positive until now.
The 49ers will need QB reinforcements after Brock Purdy’s injury
Brock Purdy was drafted last year as the third-choice QB for the 49ers. However, he soon became the first name on the team sheet due to his insane talent. It is believed that Purdy will be out for another 6 months and QB Trey Lance is also recovering from another injury.
With Jimmy G out of contract, the 49ers will have to look elsewhere to find a replacement for their QB woes. It is reported that the 49ers will look to sign experienced QBs on a short-term basis as it won’t break the bank. However, they will also try their luck during the NFL 2023 draft.
49ers GM John Lynch spoke about Purdy’s injury extensively and stated how serious his injury is. “Every person’s different, so timelines are just that, they’re guidelines, but we’ll see,” John Lynch said on Feb. 28. “The reality is the majority of these are done on baseball players. This is not a baseball injury. Even the way in which it happened, Brock’s going to throw on and a 250-pound man with an opposing force, it’s a different injury and so, the outcomes are different and we’ll see where it goes.”
Brock Purdy is expected to start throwing by mid-June and if everything goes right, then the 49ers QB will be on the team sheet by September and help the team to another successful season.
