Brock Purdy, the dead-last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has now become the 1st quarterback to register a playoff win in 2023 as he threw for more than 300 yards and multiple touchdowns in his first playoff start. The San Francisco 49ers stomped the Seattle Seahawks out of the postseason 41-23 and continue their quest for the prestigious Lombardi Trophy.
A lot of people thought that the Niners’ season was over when their backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an injury in week 13 against the Dolphins. Previously, their starting QB Trey Lance also went down with a season-ending injury in week 2. So the Niners’ last-round pick ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ took over the starting QB job and never looked back. His fairytale story continues as the 49ers QB looked impressive in his first NFL playoff start and proved to the fans that he belongs in the big league.
Furthermore, a single play from the Niners’ game against the Seahawks has left everyone stunned over his Mahomes-Esque elusiveness. During the fourth quarter of the game when his team was leading by six points and facing a 2-and-goal from the 7-yard line, the rookie QB found himself in an awkward position after avoiding a sack and managed to throw the rock to a wide-open Elijah Mitchell who ran it for a touchdown to extend the Niners lead to 13 points.
Brock Purdy’s elusiveness left fans in awe
Fans on social media could not believe how Purdy managed to throw that pass from an awkward position with two Seahawks defenders rushing him. This throw has solidified Purdy’s athleticism and elusiveness.
Some people implied that Trey Lance’s job might be in trouble after a nice stretch of impressive performances from the Iowa State product. Trey Lance himself is just a second-year QB who was deemed as the 49ers’ savior when he was drafted as the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Purdy finished the game with 332 passing yards and four total touchdowns and he became the first quarterback to register a win in his postseason debut since Russell Wilson, who did it way back in 2012.
The 49ers defeated the Seahawks and will now wait for the other wildcard games to finish to know who will they face next between the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round.
