Sean Payton took over as the head coach of the Denver Broncos on February 6 after the team fired Nathaniel Hackett after a 4-11 start to the season. With the addition of Payton, it is predicted that the rut that Russell Wilson was in will also effectively end.

Perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson signed a five-year $245 million contract with the Broncos that came with special perks. He was given his own personal office in the team building and his personal coach was allowed inside the building and during the practice. However, during Payton’s introductory interview, he said that he was unaware of such practices and that will not happen under his watch.

Sean Payton had a great run as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, where he amassed a 152-89 record and helped the franchise to win their first Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLIV. He initially announced his retirement after the 2021 season and worked with Fox Sports as an analyst before returning. With his arrival in Denver, the club is going to be formidable in a division that already has Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.

Payton is currently formulating a plan with his new coaching staff to reinvent the Broncos. While talking with former league Vice President of Officiating, Dean Blandino, the 59-year-old said that he is planning to use the ‘Rugby Scrum’ in the upcoming season. For those who don’t know, Rugby Scrum is, it is a play where players line up behind the quarterback to push him forward to get the short yardage.

Dean Blandino, who is now a rules expert for FOX, during a chat with The33rdTeam.com, said, “I was talking to Sean Payton during Sunday’s game, and he said we’re going to do this every time next season if they don’t take it out. It amounts to a rugby scrum. The NFL wants to showcase the athleticism and skill of our athletes. This is just not a skillful play. This is just a tactic that is not an aesthetically pleasing play, and I think the competition committee is going to take a look at it.”

This play was perfectly executed by the Eagles during Super Bowl LVII when Jalen Hurts was pushed by players for a quarterback sneak to get the crucial first downs. While this play is effective, it has its disadvantages as well. A player is at high risk of getting injured because he is getting pushed from both sides – front and back. This might cause some serious injuries, but until now this play hasn’t been detrimental to any athlete, so the league hasn’t changed it.

Now that Sean Payton has made up his mind to utilize the play on Denver’s offense, it’ll be interesting to see if the league shuts down the Rugby Scrum or not!
