The 2023 offseason is beginning to see a lot of blockbuster trades. The Seahawks signed a three-year $105 million contract extension with 2022 Comeback Player of the Year Geno Smith. The Saints also acquired veteran quarterback Derek Carr to a four-year $150 million deal which skyrockets their chances of winning the NFC South division.

Even the Giants extended Daniel Jones to a four-year $160 million contract, which honestly shocked a lot of people. What was probably more shocking news was the Ravens placing the non-franchise tag on Lamar Jackson. While Jackson is free to have trade talks with any teams, a few backed out, citing the reason that the team will eventually match their offer and keep him in Baltimore.

The Denver Broncos also made a great move that will help them survive in the toughest division in the NFL. The Broncos hired Sean Payton as their new head coach, who will increase their chances of turning around the franchise and help quarterback Russell Wilson from the slump he is in.

In another Broncos news, there have been rumors that the team is trying to trade wide receiver Courtland Sutton. As reported by Matthew Berry of NBC Sports, Denver is “quietly shopping Courtland Sutton. Not actively pushing him, but definitely trying to see if there’s a trade market for him and if they get a decent offer, would move him.”

Courtland Sutton was selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Broncos. Sutton had his breakthrough season in 2019 when he had 1,112 receiving yards on 72 receptions for 6 touchdowns. He then suffered a season-ending injury the next year. In the last two seasons, Sutton has been a stalwart receiver for the Broncos and signed a four-year $60.8 million extension in November 2021.

However, the team is now quietly looking to trade him and upgrade their wide receiving core. After hearing about this news, Sutton was obviously hurt and revealed his disappointment with the team on Twitter. He wrote, “I just want to be where I’m wanted and appreciated.” Looks like Sutton himself would like to part ways with Denver after he is being dangled like a bait around the league to see if anyone would want him.

If the Broncos trade the 27-year-old before June 1, they will save an approximate $6.8 million in 2023 and have $11.5 million in the dead cap as reported by Spotrac. But if the trade takes place after June 1, then the Broncos are slated to save $14.4 million in 2023. Given the animosity Sutton has harbored, he is most likely to request a trade himself. Let’s see what more drama unfolds in the coming weeks.
