Baker Mayfield is in a tough situation. The former first pick of the 2018 draft is now in a backup role. Though this was sudden as the Cleveland Browns jumped at the first opportunity to trade for star QB Deshaun Watson who found himself in some serious legal trouble the last season following the allegations of sexual harassment on nearly 22 women that also rendered him ineligible to play.
Watson is now a Brown, however, Baker Mayfield is still on the roster. It is evident that the starter role will go to Watson as the organization has lost faith in Baker, despite having star receivers such as Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr, he has failed to deliver. Last season was the tipping point for the front office as he failed to lead the team to the playoffs.
“It’s a fluid situation”: Andrew Berry on Baker Mayfield

In the light of these events, Browns GM Andrew Berry is in no rush to get rid of the QB, the team is waiting to secure the right value for Baker. “It’s a fluid situation, we will deal with it day by day. We are pleased with the weekend and pleased with the guys that we added,” Berry stated.
“I would not say it is any more challenging than really a lot of situations that cross a General Manager’s desk.” The GM is clearly not making a big deal in attempting to get Mayfield off the Browns.
Brown or not, Baker will still get paid as the team owes him $18.8 million in guaranteed salary. He has not shown up for the team’s offseason camp either, which avoids a lot of tense moments and other issues within the locker room. Cleveland could go so far as to excuse Baker from its mandatory minicamp in June. Mayfield has been also been dealing with shoulder injuries, he is currently rehabbing post his surgery.
Baker Mayfield and Jimmy G appear to be in the same boat. The Browns have four QBs in total, it is to be seen what happens with Baker Mayfield.
