Joe Flacco has quickly eclipsed Deshaun Watson as the most loved quarterback on the Cleveland Browns. The 15-year NFL veteran was signed by the team at the spur of the moment after Watson went down with a season-ending shoulder injury.
Little did the team know that this decision would be their best signing of their entire year. Joe Flacco has served in the capacity of a backup QB on the New York Jets for a while and this year, he was at home hoping to get another shot to play in the NFL. When the Browns called, he answered, and in just 5 games; he has 1,616 yards passing, 13 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.

Now, let’s come to the numbers that really matter, his contract details. The Cleveland Browns and Joe Flacco agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. That is the total value of the deal, inclusive of all bonuses and incentives.
His base salary is $1.8 million, and at the time of signing, he was entitled to $400,000 as a bonus amount. His contract carries a cap hit of $1.1 million for the team and a dead cap value of $400,000. A cap hit is the amount of money from the player’s contract that counts toward the salary cap for that respective year, in this case, for 2023. Dead cap refers to the amount that the team owes to players who may no longer be on the team. It includes amounts that have already been paid for but not accounted for in the salary cap.
Joe Flacco’s contract is structured in such a manner that it will keep him motivated to win every single game
Joe Flacco’s contract also has bonuses that he will be entitled to receive for winning. Per regular-season victory, the quarterback will get $75,000. Well, it comes as no surprise that he has been on a tear recently, leading the Browns to win the last 4 out of 5 games in which he has started.

His contract gets more lucrative if he is able to lead the Browns to the playoffs. A Wild Card round win would earn him $250,000. Yes, and it does not end there. If he can lead the Browns to a Divisional Round win, he stands to earn $500,000! He would truly deserve every penny if he manages to achieve that feat.
Now, the Browns have given Flacco the ultimate incentive to motivate him so that he does everything in his capacity to give the Browns the best shot at making the most out of their season and continuing the team’s quest for a Super Bowl. Flacco will be awarded $1 million for an AFC Championship victory and a Super Bowl victory would entitle him to a bonus of, wait for it, $2 million! That is more than his base salary value!
When added together, he stands a chance to make $3,825,000 just off of the incentives he is entitled to through postseason victories alone. That amount is double what his actual contract is worth.
While his contract remains a one-year deal, the Browns will most likely bring him back. If not, there are other teams in the NFL who will offer him a lot more money and give him more opportunities to play. It’s hard not to root for Flacco. Hopefully, the man is able to hit every single incentive laid out in his contract!
