Josh Dobbs was the backup QB for Deshaun Watson in Cleveland at the start of the season.

Josh Dobbs has had a phenomenal start to his Minnesota Vikings career. The former Cleveland Browns QB was traded to the Arizona Cardinals and then to the Vikings this season. All this happened in the span of two months. He has replaced the Vikings’ starting QB Kirk Cousins after the 35-year-old was ruled out for the season following an Achilles injury. Since replacing Cousins, Dobbs has led the Vikings to a 2-0 record and has been brilliant for them.
The Browns started the season with Dobbs in their quarterback room. However, they decided to trade him midway through the season. Their starter Deshaun Watson did not have a great start to the season and was recently ruled out for the season because of a shoulder injury. Watson and Dobbs have been good friends. The Browns QB opened up about their relationship on his podcast, ‘QB Unplugged’ where Dobbs was a guest.

Watson said:
First of, I'm proud of you, because we've been rocking since high school pretty much. Going through all offseason together, training camp. I remember we playing golf, we talking about the season, you know what I'm saying.
Dobbs started the 2023 season as a backup to Watson in Cleveland. He went to Arizona to play in place of the injured Kyler Murray but had a rough start to his Cardinals career. However, he seems to have found a home in Minnesota.
Watson injured his shoulder against the Baltimore Ravens last week. Dobbs would’ve replaced him at the quarterback position had the Browns kept him. Now, the Browns will have to start P.J. Walker who has a 1-1 record this season as a starter.
Josh Dobbs talks about Deshaun Watson’s injury
The Minnesota Vikings traded for Josh Dobbs and reaped its rewards immediately. The former Cleveland Browns QB came in the Vikings building and has led them to two consecutive victories. Dobbs is replacing Kirk Cousins who is ruled out for the season due to an Achilles injury. He was a backup to Browns’ QB Deshaun Watson at the start of the season.

Watson suffered a shoulder injury and is out for the season. Dobbs would have replaced him at quarterback if the Browns wouldn’t have traded him to the Arizona Cardinals. However, the Vikings QB isn’t getting caught up in the “what ifs.”
Dobbs said when asked about Watson’s injury:
I don’t really live in the world of hypotheticals. I kind of just stay right here. Obviously prayers for Deshaun and his surgery. I wish him a speedy recovery. But does my mind wander to what ifs? No. I have so much on my plate just in preparing for each game, especially this game against a really good defense, that I got to stay right here. Stay present in it all and worry about my situation and making the most of it.
The Vikings will play their next game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Since Cousins’ injury, the Vikings have won two games on the trot, thanks in large part to Dobbs’ heroics. He will hope to continue that play against the Broncos on Sunday.
