It wasn’t that long ago that Devin White wanted out of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The linebacker was reportedly unhappy with his contract situation and the team’s performance last season.

This prompted a lot of speculation as to where White would end up if he did leave. But the question was: would the Buccaneers even let go of one of their starters just before the regular season? That would mean either drafting another player or looking into free agency for solutions.

As was the case with most players during the offseason regarding their contracts, they would avoid showing up for training. Fans feared that would be the case with White as well. However, the Bucs refused to budge and dismissed Devin White’s plea for a trade. Fortunately for them, the 25-year-old showed up for practice before the preseason began.

What’s interesting is that White has made a complete U-turn on wanting to leave Tampa. The Pro Bowler wrote on social media that he has no intention of leaving for now. “This defense is so fun to be apart of; I’m stupid for trying to leave! Young, fast physical steppers,” White declared yesterday on Bucs’ celebration post.

White’s sudden change is not a coincidence. It coincides with the Buccaneers winning start to the season. They won both of their games in consecutive weeks with a very solid passing game.

While most analysts will give credit to quarterback Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay’s offensive line deserves a lot of praise, especially Devin White. The former first-round pick looked to have turned a page and is more or less a mountain in the defense.

In the Buccaneers’ first game against the Minnesota Vikings, White was relentless. He led the team with 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and one tackle for loss. Moreover, during pass coverage, he only allowed two catches for minus-2 yards.

With such output, the Glazers should consider triggering his fifth-year option. Devin White is still on his rookie four-year, $29.32 million contract, which he signed in 2019. But his failed trade demand meant that he had to swallow being paid $11.7 million for the 2023 season. White wants to eclipse Ravens offensive lineman Roquan Smith, who got a five-year, $100 million contract with $45 million guaranteed.
