Buster Skrine, who played in the NFL for more than a decade with multiple teams, including the New York Jets, retired from the league back in 2022. And now, more than a year after his retirement, Skrine is facing legal trouble as he was arrested in Canada for allegedly being involved in a bank fraud scheme across the country.

The former Jets defensive back was arrested in Canada earlier this week and is now facing more than 12 charges of fraud. On Thursday, the Canadian officers announced the news of the arrest in a press release. He is facing fraud charges totaling more than $100,000.

The Durham Regional Police in Whitby, Ontario claims Skrine “was attending numerous financial institutions where he would identify himself as a retired NFL player. He would open bank accounts with fraudulent cheques and obtain a portion of the money prior to the cheque clearing.”

Besides, the press release also alleges that there are reasons to believe the retired NFL player has been committing similar crimes across the country. Skrine was arrested by the cops with the help of U.S. Customs and Border Protection at a Toronto Airport just ahead of the former Jets cornerback’s scheduled return to the United States on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old has been charged with seven counts of making false statements, four counts of fraud, three counts of possessing property acquired by crime over $5k, and one count of possessing property acquired by crime under $5k. The Canadian officials are holding Skrine under custody for a bail hearing.

The Chattanooga product Buster Skrine was drafted in the 5th round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. It took 2 years for Skrine to become a starter in the league.

In the final 2 years of his rookie deal with the Browns, Skrine started every game except one. His performance got him rewarded, as the Jets signed the cornerback to a 4-year deal worth up to $25 million.

He spent his next 4 years in New York. He left the Jets in 2019 and signed a 3-year $16.5 million contract with the Chicago Bears. But he was released by the team just after 2 years.

The cornerback had a couple of brief stints with the Tennessee Titans and the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 before eventually deciding to step away from the game. The Titans’ head coach Mike Vrabel announced Skrine’s decision to retire back in July 2022.
