Looks like the Houston Texans‘ luck worked really well in their favor with the first-round pick of the 2023 NFL draft as C.J. Stroud. The rookie with just nine games into the season has already become one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
The Texans haven’t improved this much ever, as the rookie sensation has ranked the team second in the AFC South listing, standing at 5-4. He is leading the yards per game with 291.8 and a mere two interceptions so far. Not only that, the No. 2 pick is ranked 3rd in yards per attempt at 8.3 and 6th in passer rating at 101.0.
With such brilliant records in the rookie year are not that common in NFL history. Stroud may also be leading the Texans to the postseason this year, after a five-year drought.
With that being said, it’s obvious the quarterback hasn’t been considered as a rookie by his opponents, that many analysts mentioned. While talking on the matter, the rookie sensation asserted how he just wants to keep working for his team, saying:
It’s cool to have people recognize some of the things that I’ve done or — as a team, we’ve done.
During a press conference last Wednesday, the Texans QB said:
I don’t think it’s just me, but it’s really cool to see. Especially the vets who will reach out or say something on Twitter, and I have people who text me stuff.. things like that, so I really appreciate that. It doesn’t go unnoticed.
As he continued, Stroud highlighted how he wants to do better and complete as he can. He admitted with his performance this season, he isn’t seen as just a rookie, but an “A-game,” like how his opponents are making their best efforts because “they want to knock me off or whatever they think.”
Stroud concluded his point on that, adding:
For me, I just really want to keep getting better and better and keep that chip on my shoulder and just keep grinding.
How does C.J. Stroud feel about the MVP conversation?
This season, the rookie quarterback has shown his supreme form, the one no one expected. With numbers logged at 61.6 percent passes completion for 2,626 yards with 15 touchdowns. These stats directly put the quarterback in the MVP conversation, that he truly deserves.
During his press conference, Stroud acknowledged what was happening all around — him being listed on top of MVP-worthy candidates. However, he also acknowledges that it’s a part of the process, as he’s playing better this week so everyone is loving and appreciating him. But if he makes even the slightest bit of a mistake, it won’t take long for the same people to hate him.
He said:
It’s been cool to be able to be in the talk, but just like they love me this week, they’ll hate me the next. So, I don’t try to look at that stuff. I try to stay even-keeled and just stay on the straight and narrow, and just work really hard and make my teammates around me better.
By the end of the press conference, Stroud shared how football has taught him to be honest and humble. He believes in this game, a person can really look themselves in the mirror and work where they’re lagging behind.
