CJ Stroud channeled his inner ‘Black Mamba’ on Sunday night. The rookie Houston Texans quarterback, who idolizes the late great Kobe Bryant, showed up at NRG Stadium and handed a beatdown to the Tennessee Titans.

Stroud has been one of the feel-good stories of the season. Not only did he revive the spark of a struggling franchise, but he also brought them on the cusp of playing post-season football. However, he suffered a concussion in Week 14 vs. the New York Jets and had to sit out the next two games.

The Texans managed to win one of those and keep themselves afloat enough for Stroud to weave his magic wand once again. The 22-year-old did not disappoint. He secured the Texans’ ninth win of the season by registering 24 completions for 213 yards and one touchdown as the Texans won a blowout 27-3 against the Tennessee Titans.

He attended the post-game press conference wearing a Kobe Bryant T-shirt. When the reporters asked him about it, he replied:

Kobe is my favorite player of all time in basketball. Honestly, I don’t think I had any crazy ideas about wearing it. I saw it just like a mindset type of switch on me.

Stroud referred to Bryant’s famous quote, “The job is not finished,” which the NBA legend said when the Lakers were 2-0 up against the Celtics in 2009. He wanted to remind everyone that the Texans don’t yet have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

We’ve had a great season. It’s been a complete turnaround from last year, but in my opinion, the job’s not finished.

Can CJ Stroud lead the Houston Texans to the playoffs?

DeMeco Ryans-led Texans have a 48% chance of making it to the playoffs for the first time since 2019, as per the New York Times. They currently sit just outside of the bubble ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Above them are their Week 18 AFC South rivals, the Indianapolis Colts. This will be a tricky ask even for them because the Colts rarely lose at Lucas Oil Stadium and are currently on a three-game winning streak. But CJ Stroud is not ready to throw in the towel.

The time is now. It’s not next year or the year after that. It’s right now. We have the opportunity to control our own destiny, so I’m excited to do that.
DeMeco Ryan on playoff chances

The Texans have to beat the Colts to make sure they scrape through. Not only that, they might even win the division if the table-topping Jacksonville Jaguars lose their final game in Tennessee.
