USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams was reduced to tears after a disappointing 42-52 loss against rivals the Washington Huskies. Despite a valiant effort to keep his team in the game, Michael Phins Jr. had the last laugh.

A 42-yard touchdown pass to Mario Williams ended the third quarter with all the momentum in favor of the No. 20-ranked team. However, when Washington’s Grady Gross smashed a 43-yard field goal, the game looked to be slipping out of the hands of Lincoln Reily.

The final nail in the USC coffin was struck with just 2 minutes left on the clock. Dillon Johnson‘s one-yard gain secured his fourth touchdown of the night, along with the Huskies’ ninth win of the season. They are currently one of the four teams, alongside the Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan State Wolverines, and Ohio State Buckeyes, that haven’t lost a single game in the 2023 season.

For Caleb Williams and USC, it was their third defeat. It was a big game, not just for the Trojans but for the 21-year-old personally. He has come under immense pressure of late because of his uncharacteristic, underwhelming performances in patches. But this game was anything but.

Williams gave it his all with 27 completions from 35 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 10 times, gaining 16 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the game at the end of the day. He was seen walking up to his family members on the stands afterward and appeared to shed a few tears of disappointment.

Caleb Williams’ playoff dream is over

Last season, USC won 11 games, lost three, and didn’t make the playoffs. Before the start of the season, Caleb Williams transferred from the Sooners to assume the primary quarterback role and almost played off-season football. And after Saturday night’s loss to the Huskies, that dream looks to be well and truly over.

According to NFL Rookie Watch, Williams has an unsatisfactory 4-8 (.333) record when facing ranked teams. Not only that, he has lost all three games against ranked opponents in 2023 (Notre Dame, Washington, and Utah State).

It’s a sad situation because fans will probably never get to see him play in a championship game. More so if he decides to move on to the NFL. But that’s still not guaranteed, considering he has hinted at returning to play college football in his senior year.
