Caleb Williams faced the 6th-ranked Oregon State Ducks for the first time since the USC Trojans fell out of the top 20 of the AP Ranking since head coach Lincoln Riley took over. It was a showdown against another Heisman contender, Ducks quarterback Bo Nix.
Williams was looking to answer all the criticism that he received for crying after the 42-52 loss against the Washington Huskies last matchday. However, it was the Ducks who got off to a blinder, with Nix finding wide receiver Tez Johnson for a 77-yard touchdown with 11 minutes on the clock in the first quarter.
Instead of going on the back foot, the Trojans looked to answer back. And who else but Caleb Willimas led the charge? Just moments after the Ducks TD, the 21-year-old razzled and dazzled with the ball to find a cheeky pass to running back Austin Jones.

He was tackled by a Ducks defender and went out of bounds. But it was brilliant considering the immense pressure that comes after conceding early on. Taking a shotgun, Williams looked downfield for a pass, but the routes were blocked. So he had to adjust in a jiffy while on-rushing Ducks offensive lineman Marcus Harper closed in for a sack.
He avoided Harper by fainting to the right, then gained a few yards to the right of the field. While he was close to the 35-yard mark, another Oregon defender rushed in to stop him from advancing any further. So he went for the next best thing and tossed the ball to Jones.
However, that wasn’t enough to please the social media contingent, who were already starting to move away from the Caleb Williams hype train due to the recent string of losses.
The Ducks were leading the Trojans 22-14 at halftime. Nix completed 262 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Williams had 11 completions for 159 yards. Ducks receiver Troy Franklin caught two passes for 147 yards and scored one touchdown.
