The norm is that players employ an agent to get the best possible deal in the draft. But Caleb Williams is going against the traditional method and won’t have an agent or mediator in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Williams is projected to be the No. 1 pick, and as per NBC Sports, he will be entering the draft by himself. Mike Florio revealed that the USC quarterback will not change his decision.

The Chicago Bears is the likeliest destination for the Trojans’ QB. However, he isn’t thrilled about the prospect and could try his best for a different location, preferably closer to home. Now the question is: how will he negotiate without an agent by his side?

Florio explained the negatives of Caleb Williams not employing an agent.

The risk for Williams comes from the reality that the agents who represent other high-end quarterbacks might (or will) spend the next two months trying to get teams to take their clients instead of Williams. It can get nasty.

Williams won’t be the first to walk on this path. He will follow in the footsteps of Lamar Jackson. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback entered the 2018 draft without an agent.

After successful campaigns, with Louisville winning the Heisman Trophy, Jackson could have easily been selected very early. However, not having an agent hit his chances, and he dropped to the 32nd spot on the draft list.

Florio feared that Williams might face a similar situation.

Negativity will be spread about Williams, and he won’t have a connected agent to push back aggressively. Williams will not have the opportunity to fight fire with fire.
Continuing further, Florio added

Football fans on social media made fun of Williams’ decision. His reputation wasn’t so great before because he didn’t want to play in Chicago. And after the latest development, they claimed the 22-year-old would be busted in the NFL.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

A few days before the latest news, Williams hinted at where his preferred destination could be. When the Washington Commanders appointed Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator, he liked a post sharing the information.

Kingsbury was the OC at USC, helping Williams make his name. On top of that, he is from Washington, and the commanders hold the No. 2 pick. If they trade up or Williams drops down one spot, then he will end up in the capital franchise.
