Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as the Super Bowl LVII champions after a gruesome and neck-to-neck battle with the Philadelphia Eagles, the 2023 offseason has officially been kicked off. Teams are evaluating which position needs to be updated and which players to resign or cut and all other technicalities.

One of the main or rather the most important trade is that of quarterbacks. Many signal-callers have hit free agency this season like Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, and possibly Lamar Jackson if he doesn’t get franchise tagged or signs a $200 million fully guaranteed deal with the Ravens.

Of these quarterbacks, Derek Carr’s situation is probably one of the most interesting ones. After a disappointing 6-9 start, the Las Vegas Raiders benched their nine-year veteran quarterback which was a clear indication that he is going to be cut by the team. After the regular season ended, Carr penned an emotional note thanking the Raiders fans for loving and supporting him all these years. On February 14, the Raiders officially released Carr and waived their no-trade clause in his contract.

With Derek Carr, a 4x Pro Bowl quarterback hitting free agency, many quarterback-needy teams will surely approach him. The most notable team that could end up being home for the 31-year-old signal-caller is the New Orleans Saints. The Saints met with the Fresno State alum on February 8 but were Carr refused the trade becuase he was still under contract with the Raiders.

Ever since Super Bowl XLIV winning quarterback Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton retired, the Saints are in a limbo. They ended the 2022 season with a 7-10 record with Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton under center. Derek Carr can be a great fit for the Saints but there is the salary cap issue as they are more than $59 million over the 2023 salary cap, as reported by Over The Cap.

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan tried to recruit Derek Carr to the team after he was let go by the Raiders on Valentine’s Day. Jordan tweeted: “I know I said adios to social media but @derekcarrqb I know it may be too soon but it’s also Valentine’s Day are you are you trynna swap out black and silver and fall in luv with BLACK & GOLD?”

New Orleans has the 29th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft so it is impossible for them to select a quarterback. And with Jordan trying to recruit Carr looks like the Saints have somewhat given an idea to their players that maybe he might become their starting quarterback for the next season. The Saints are also in talks with Baker Mayfield but it is highly unlikely that they sign him so looks like Derek Carr will be donning the black and gold jersey. The final decision will be rolled out soon. Let’s wait and watch!
