The modern equivalent of Cam Newton could only be Lamar Jackson. Both MVP-winning quarterbacks are as efficient with their feet as they are with their hands.
Jackson has been stellar for the Baltimore Ravens all season. Finally, he managed to keep himself injury-free. He led the Ravens to a 13-4 regular season finish, completing 307 of 457 attempts for 3,678 yards (all career highs) and 24 touchdowns and rushing 148 times for 821 yards and five touchdowns.
During the Ravens divisional round against the Houston Texans, Jackson rushed 100 yards with his feet, scoring two touchdowns. The 27-year-old is undeniably the primary reason for the residents of Baltimore to dream about another Super Bowl trophy since Ray Lewis‘ era.
According to Newton, they even think Jackson has played a more pivotal role than the two-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker. The former Carolina stalwart said in his 4th & 1 podcast:
There is not a more dynamic player in all of football than Lamar Jackson; Patrick Mahomes is dynamic in his own right. A different dynamic. But electric, Virginia Tech, Michael Vick electric. That's Lamar Jackson. Name me a commercial that Lamar Jackson is in. You can't even probably name me an endorsement that Lamar Jackson has. Lamar Jackson is the epitome of keeping the main thing.Cam Newton said
Football fans on social media make fun of Cam Newton for choosing Lamar Jackson over Ray Lewis as the most important player in Ravens history
Lewis is a Hall of Famer, and not just because he has two rings, but also because he is one of the nine defensive players to bag a Super Bowl MVP (2001). Usually, it’s the quarterback who takes home the best player award, so it shows how hard it is for a player in defense to win one.
On the other hand, Lamar Jackson is on the cusp of another NFL MVP, as per his fellow quarterback. Jackson unanimously won the 2019 edition of the award, establishing his legacy as one of the best. And even though Cam Newton has the vote, Ray Lewis has a special place for fans who have been watching football far longer.
After Lewis’ retirement, the Ravens franchise fell flat. For almost 6 years, they were nowhere near producing the same brand of football as the 48-year-old did in his career until they drafted Jackson from Louisville.
The 2023 season is the first occasion when Lamar will play in the conference championship again, and that too at home. Not only that, they are 3.5-point favorites to beat the defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.
