After claiming that there are no 32 quarterbacks better than him in the league just a few weeks ago, the former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has now claimed that he’s willing to be a backup and mentor certain signal-callers including the Browns QB Deshaun Watson and the Bills QB Josh Allen.
On Wednesday, the former league MVP uploaded a video on his Youtube page where he claimed that even though he still believes that there are no 32 QBs better than him, he is still willing to be back up and groom some of the young quarterbacks starting with the Browns QB Deshaun Watson.
“I’d backup Deshaun Watson,” Newton said of who he’d want to backup. “He was on my 7-on-7 all-star team, and I’ve grown to admire the person, the athlete that he is. Going through a lot of turmoil that’s behind him, I know I can provide services for him on the field as well as off the field.”
The Panthers icon listed 12 QBs in a list of athletes who he is willing to be backup for. The 12 players on the list are Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Tua Tagovailoa, Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, and Sam Howell.
Furthermore, despite missing some big names, the 34-year-old QB claimed that he will be a mentor to three prospects in the 2023 Draft class Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson.
“If you think about the list, it’s really to the point,” Newton said. ”Some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that their franchises are okay with and that’s fine. I am just voicing my opinion and I am just getting the narrative out.”

Social media trolls Cam Newton over his list

Cam Newton got heavily clowned on social media for admitting that he’s willing to be a backup in the league despite claiming that there are currently no 32 QBs better than him in this league.
Newton also notably left some of the big names including Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence off the list. Maybe he doesn’t think he can beat them for their spot or maybe he doesn’t want to be a mentor to them.
Nevertheless, Cam Newton will certainly be a good mentor and a great backup for a franchise. And his open invitation to the teams might intrigue the franchises’ to make a run for him. It’s highly unlikely that the NFL world would see the Panthers legend playing football again but maybe one can never say never in this league.
