The former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been out of the league for more than 2 years now. He hasn’t played in the league since 2021 and has been focusing on life after football. Amidst this, the former MVP QB revealed the Atlanta Falcons would be the only team he would play for if he decided to return amid rumors about the franchise’s interest in hiring Bill Belichick as their next head coach.
Newton recently made an appearance on the NFL Network show ‘Good Morning Football’, where he discussed his future in the league. In that episode, Newton revealed that the Falcons would be the only team he would play for in his potential return. Newton also explained his reason, but it didn’t involve the legendary head coach Bill Belichick.

It’s just really one [team]. Me having a family now, it’s always been about family, I don’t see myself leaving Atlanta. If it’s not Atlanta, I don’t wanna do it.Cam Newton revealed on the show
Newton played the majority of his career with the Panthers, who are in the same division as the Atlanta-based football team. If Newton joined the Falcons, which is highly unlikely, it would be the ultimate plot twist in his career.
Furthermore, what makes this more spicy is the Falcons’ relentless pursuit of the former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Newton has already played under Belichick during their tenure in New England. Now, there might be a reunion between them in Atlanta, although it’s highly unlikely.
The Falcons have conducted 2 interviews with Belichick and there’s a high possibility they could rope in the veteran head coach, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowl rings, during his tenure. As for Newton, the Falcons are certainly in the market to find a good quarterback, but it’s highly unlikely they would have any interest in the 34-year-old Newton.
Falcons are the only team pursuing Bill Belichick so far
When the Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick earlier this month, everyone thought teams would compete to acquire the 6-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.

However, this has not been the case so far. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Atlanta Falcons are the only team showing interest in Belichick.
The only team that he has spoken to so far, to my knowledge, is the Falcons. And so while we wondered about Dallas, we wondered about Philly, we wonder about Buffalo, you can do that exercise for a lot of teams because he is the greatest coach of all-time. He belongs somewhere. So it’s a little strange.Adam Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show
Schefter also noted how when Tom Brady hit the free agency market back in 2020, only two teams, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, showed interest in the veteran QB. Schefter drew similarities between Brady and Belichick.
