Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton might not be a regular feature in the National Football League, but he has managed to keep himself relevant with a number of controversial statements over the past few years. The 34-year-old is currently without a franchise, having played his last game in 2021 for the Panthers on his return season.

Newton who is no stranger to controversies and doing out-of-the-box things, offered an unusual suggestion on the usage of marijuana in the NFL, the usage of which is in itself illegal throughout the United States. In a video posted by the quarterback, he suggested that the special team kickers could possibly benefit from smoking marijuana.

Cam Newton’s net worth is $75 million and argued that kickers often have a tendency of fluffing their lines under pressure situations. Newton felt that taking a puff of marijuana before coming onto the gridiron, would help the kickers calm their nerves eventually helping them score a field goal.

“I’m going with kicker. I’ve been around a lot of stoners. Your meter is extremely low, and a lot of kickers miss kicks because they get too excited, right? I mean, so they never roll the doobie up and give it to the kicker right before they go out there and be more calmer in the game,” Newton said in the YouTube video which seems to have been taken down currently.

The NFL introduced a set of new rules for players who tested positive for marijuana last year toning down punishments and suspensions to the ones contained in the earlier NFL drug violation policy. The usage of marijuana or cannabis is restricted in the majority of countries although there have been recent suggestions from the United Nations that the drug might have several medicinal properties that need to be found out through extensive research in the upcoming days.

Newton’s controversial comments have raised numerous questions on what the law needs to be in context to the usage of marijuana in the National Football League.

The 34-year-old quarterback seems to have played the final game of his career with a return to the NFL looking like a distant dream at the moment. His career peaked in 2015 when he won the MVP award that season leading the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl 50. Newton made a move to the New England Patriots in 2020 succeeding Tom Brady, but failed to make a big impression which eventually led to him being released in 2021.
