Cam Newton in early December forced the football world to raise eyebrows when he designated Brock Purdy as a ‘game manager.’ It came as a surprise because the San Francisco 49ers quarterback was one of the top three candidates for winning the NFL MVP title.
Fans and analysts were left divided by the sudden left-field shout from Newton. Few agreed while several tried to brush the former NFL quarterback’s assessment under the rug. A section of the media even went after Newton for the comments, citing that he has been out of the league for a while and does not know what he is talking about.
Since then, Purdy has led the 49ers (11-3) to a few wins against the Eagles, Seahawks, and Cardinals. However, his biggest threat was looming on the horizon in the form of the AFC leaders, the Baltimore Ravens (11-3). Yet they were the 6.5 favorite to clinch their 12th win of the season.
It ticked off Ravens cornerback Kyle Hamilton, who, despite taking a dig at Cam Newton’s’man manager‘ statement, felt disrespected by the odd makers. Hamilton promised to make the game difficult for the 49ers, and he kept it.
Purdy was intercepted on three of the first four drives of the game for the 49ers. Hamilton stole two of them, and one each went to Patrick Queen and Marlon Humphrey. Purdy’s legitimacy for the MVP shout was dealt a massive blow.
Newton, who had faced a lot of stick for his comments, took the opportunity to share his views on Brock Purdy‘s abysmal first-half performance against the Ravens.
Is Brock Purdy proving Cam Newton correct?
Newton is a Super Bowl finalist and an NFL MVP (2015). A player who has seen the highs of being a football player should not be taken lightly. Even if he is detached from the game for a while, there is merit to his claims.

According to the 34-year-old, he hasn’t seen enough from Brock Purdy to consider him in the same category as Lamar Jackson. While the 9ers QB was getting manhandled by the Ravens’ defense, Jackson was running the game on the offense. He completed the game with 252 yards, ran for 45 more, and threw two touchdowns.
After this game, one can easily say that the Pro Bowler has leapfrogged Purdy in the 2023 Most Valuable Player race. On the other hand, 9-yard running back Christian McCaffrey made his case strong after rushing for 103 yards and a TD and adding 28 receiving yards.
