Every football player has a favorite number; even ex-NFL quarterback Cam Newton is no different. Immediately after joining the Carolina Panthers, he went straight to Jimmy Clausen with a request.

Newton asked for the No. 2 jersey, which Clausen was the proprietor of. Now, that’s bold considering he was a rookie and was demanding something for the person with whom he will fight for a starting birth.

Both players were drafted a year apart: Clausen in 2010 and Newton in 2011. The 34-year-old was a product of Blinn and then Auburn, where he had worked wonders wearing the No. 2 shirt. So he was keen on continuing that tradition in the NFL.

In a recent interview on ‘2Cool2Blog’, the three-time Pro Bowler revealed the conversation he had with Clausen regarding the exchange of numbers. Newton revealed his counterpart wanted around $1 million for the transaction.

He’s [Jimmy Clausen] like, 'Sh*t, if you want it, you gotta pay for it.’ I was like, ‘Cool, how much?’ He said ‘a million'. I said, ‘Boy, kiss my as*.

Well, it’s unusual for someone to ask for that much, but considering how Clausen’s career went, passing up on a million dollars does sound reasonable. Newton’s reaction was expected.

A million dollars, bro? People don’t make a million dollars in a lifetime, let alone the fact that I’m going to give you a million dollars just for a number.

The former Notre Dame shot caller reportedly lowered the asking price to as low as $750,000. But it was no go, and Newton ended up sticking with the number 1 jersey he was given during the draft.

I said, 'you for real?’ and then I hung that phone up.That will be the last time Jimmy Clausen will ever be heard of in Carolina.

How did Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen’s careers pan out?

Clausen was rushed into the NFL season on opening day as primary QB Matt Moore was out because of a concussion. The season ended with the Panthers winning just two games. It wasn’t any better for the 36-year-old, who threw interceptions and three touchdowns in 13 games, which saw head coach Jon Beason relieved of duties.

Ron Rivera was appointed before the following season began and added 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Although the year ended with a 6-10 record, he threw for more than 4000 yards (only once in his NFL career).

Arguably his best year was 2015, when the Panthers just lost once all season and reached the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, they lost to Peyton Manning‘s Denver Broncos, but Newton was given the NFL MVP title.

After nine seasons, he left to play for the Patriots in 2020 but returned to Carolina for one final season in 2021. Currently, he is a free agent, and reportedly, the New York Jets are looking into his availability.

However, Jimmy Clausen‘s NFL career took a completely different path. He stayed with the Panthers for three more years after his rookie year but did not take a single snap. Then in 2014, they decided to trade him to the Chicago Bears. But with six games in two years at Soldier Field, he was on the move once more, joining the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s fair to say Newton is the one who came out on top in this battle. And he has been winning outside of the gridiron too. He is close to becoming a father for the eighth time.
