In the violent sport of football, injuries are very common. Still, on rare occasions, fans have to witness some scary injuries in this sport. On one such occasion, the Carolina Panthers‘ rookie offensive lineman Chandler Zavala suffered a scary neck injury during their week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

During the 1st quarter of the game, the Panthers were trailing by 14 points and were trying to put some points on the board. When the Panthers were trying to run the ball during a 2nd and 9, the left guard Chandler Zavala collapsed on the field after engaging with a defender. He was on the ground motionless for some time before the medical staff got to the field to check on him.

Benches from both sides emptied as the medical personnel looked at the rookie guard. Soon, a cart and a backboard came out for Chandler Zavala, and the 6’3″ offensive lineman was placed on the cart. The Panthers players, Lions players, and the fans looked concerned as Zavala was being taken out to a hospital for further instructions.

On a positive note, Zavala gave a thumbs up to the crowd, showing some movement for the first time since he went down with injury. Later, FOX’s sideline reporter Pam Oliver said that Zavala suffered a neck injury in the seemingly unharmful play and was being taken to the hospital for further evaluations.

The Panthers continued their game without one of their starting guards and struggled to keep up with the Lions’ offense. In the end, the Panthers suffered a rough 42-24 loss against the Detroit-based football team.

Chandler Zavala flew back to Carolina with his team

In a positive update on the Chandler Zavala injury situation, NFL insider Tom Pelissero revealed that the Panthers’ offensive lineman was discharged from the hospital and traveled to Carolina with the team.

Bradley Bozeman, the starting center of the Carolina-based football team who was next to the starting guard, revealed that Zavala had some words with him after the injury that sounded encouraging.

“He was like, ‘Hey, go get this,’ so we knew he was good. But just trying to keep fighting and trying to just lock back into the moment. It’s always a feeling of relief whenever they say something back, or they give the thumbs up, or whatever it is. He did that, and you know, he was letting us know that he was cool,” said Bozeman according to the team’s website.

Nonetheless, the Panthers tried hard but couldn’t outscore Detroit on Sunday. With the loss against the Lions, the Panthers fell to 0-5. Next, they will be facing the offensive juggernauts the Miami Dolphins next Sunday in their week 6 matchup.
