WATCH: Chargers HC Brandon Staley SNAPS at a reporter for unnecessarily relating the team’s 0-2 start to ‘tough’ playoff loss against Jaguars last season

The Los Angeles Chargers have a great overall roster. They should be winning football games. A lot of them. They have a generational talent at quarterback in Justin Herbert. They also have HC Brandon Staley. Many in the league considered Staley as one of the best defensive minds in football a couple of years ago. However, the Chargers have started the season 0-2. Fans and analysts have asked questions about Staley’s ability to lead this team.
After losing their first game in a shootout against the red-hot Miami Dolphins, the Chargers came into Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans ready to prove their doubters wrong. They started well, leading the game 11-0 by the second quarter. The Titans found their groove late in the second period, and the Chargers lost another close game in overtime, 27-24.
Staley was, understandably, frustrated with the result, and it boiled over in the post-game press conference. He was asked if last year’s playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars had any effect on the team starting the game 0-2, and Staley did not like the question at all and snapped at the reporter. “I’m not worried about the Jacksonville loss — the Jacksonville loss hasn’t carried onto the season whatsoever. If you’ve seen our training camp or you’ve seen the way we’ve played in the first two games it hasn’t had an impact on our team whatsoever,” Staley said.
He further said, “Our team is connected, our team has played heart out in two games and we’ve lost two tough games but there’s has nothing to do with the Jacksonville game and if you ask anyone in our locker room it has nothing to do with the Jacksonville game and that’s just the truth.”
Staley concluded by asking the media not to look for storylines to fit their agenda, and the Jacksonville game was behind them. “It’s a convenient storyline for you and for everybody else but it’s not the truth!”
The Chargers’ previous season ended in a disappointing playoff loss to the Jaguars that saw them blow a 27-point lead during the game. It was the biggest comeback in playoff history as Staley and the Chargers were left shell-shocked. They entered this season with renewed expectations of making a deep playoff run, but that will be difficult to achieve after a poor start.
Brandon Staley is under pressure after the Chargers’ 0-2 start to the season
Brandon Staley was once considered a genius defensive mind who revolutionized the sport with innovative defensive schemes. The Los Angeles Chargers hired him as their head coach after a great season as the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator in 2020.
However, since becoming the HC of the Chargers, Staley has found it difficult to emulate the same success he had with the Rams. The Chargers have one playoff appearance in his two seasons with the team. That lone playoff game was against the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, resulting in a 27-point blown lead by the Chargers. Staley is under pressure after a poor start to the 2023 NFL season and will have to deliver wins as soon as possible.
Staley and the Chargers will take on the Minnesota Vikings on September 24 in their next game. The Vikings themselves are 0-2 to begin the season. The Chargers will have to win their next game to have any hopes of qualifying for the postseason. If they fail to do so, the pressure on Staley will keep on increasing.
