Regardless of what the oddsmakers say, Jim Harbaugh believes JJ McCarthy, whom he coached at the Michigan Wolverines in college football, is the best quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft. And moving forward, his high opinions on the quarterback’s abilities sure aren’t going to change.
After the recent series of Annual Pro Days of the various schools, the top prospects of the 2024 class proved why they are considered the best quarterbacks in college football.

Among these, Caleb Williams reportedly shone the brightest, given that he’s also the most likely to be the No. 1 overall pick.
However, the Los Angeles Chargers’ newly appointed head coach thinks differently. Forget the USC star; if the Chargers had the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, Harbaugh wouldn’t have wasted a second drafting McCarthy. Harbaugh told the reporters that McCarthy’s Pro Day was the best Pro Day that he has ever seen—better than any quarterback.
The workout that J.J [McCarthy] had... I’ve been to a lot of Pro Day workouts and watched quarterbacks throw. That's the best I’ve ever seen a quarterback do at a pro day.Said the Chargers’ head coach on Monday.
The reason why McCarthy takes so much pride in the Michigan star quarterback’s performance is that, after his Pro Day, several coaches and GMs came up to him to appreciate the work and efforts he put into McCarthy.
Once they were around him…I was hearing stories about how he is on the board, on the field, the little things, the intangibles. It was absolutely no surprise whatsoever. There was raving.Continuing further, he added
Chargers aim for top non-QB prospect with No. 5 pick
Unfortunately for fans fond of McCarthy and Harbaugh’s QB-HC duo, they wouldn’t get to see it anytime soon in the NFL. As the Chargers already have a solid starting quarterback in the form of Justin Herbert, drafting McCarthy just for the sake of having him as a backup would be a waste of potential.

That’s why they are likely to use their No. 5 pick in other positions, like linebackers or wide receivers, to prepare their team for next season. As reported, the first four picks would be quarterbacks; the Chargers will have the best option for non-quarterbacks with their fifth pick.
Meanwhile, McCarthy is for sure considered among those four top prospects, alongside Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye. Given McCarthy’s phenomenal 29-30 winning record at college, he might get picked third or even second.
