The NFL offseason has officially started, which means no football until August. Fans generally hate offseason other than the combine and the Draft but this year thanks to the XFL, football isn’t going to stop.
Owned by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, XFL or Xtreme Football League is similar to the NFL and started back in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league shut down. After three long years, the league is back and running and has already attracted a lot of fans in its inaugural week.
As reported by ESPN PR, XFL garnered around 235.6 million views on ESPN and other sources’ online videos. And more than a million people joined from their homes live on various channels like ABC, ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and FX, which aired the spring football game. Since the NFL is in its offseason, more and more fans are getting attracted to the XFL.
2x Super Bowl champion Khalen Saunders expresses his wish to play in the XFL
Even Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders was impressed by the opening week games of XFL. The 2x Super Bowl winner took to Twitter and expressed his desire to play in the XFL at a different position after he retires from the NFL. Saunders wrote, “If the XFL is still around when i get done playing in the NFL, I’m losing 50 lbs and going to play Tailback for the hometown team. Lmao gon be like Steven Jackson 2.0”
Khalen Saunders added a video of the St. Louis BattleHawks locker room where players were celebrating after a fourth-quarter comeback victory over the Seattle Sea Dragons. Saunders is just 26-year-old and he can play at least for the next 6-7 years. The real question is whether the XFL can survive that long or will it crumble just like it did back in 2020.
XFL was originally founded by WWE executive Vince McMahon in 2018. The league was operational for five weeks but closed down during COVID and soon after McMahon filed for bankruptcy; the league was eventually sold to Dwayne Johnson.
The Rock has a great fan following all over the world due to his wrestling career and his movies. So, the XFL is gaining a lot of viewers. It’ll be interesting to see if history repeats itself or will the league flourish this time around. A bonus point would most definitely be watching Saunder lose a few pounds and play as a tailback!
