Patrick Mahomes lost back-to-back games for the first time in more than two years in controversial circumstances. On Sunday night, the Buffalo Bills rolled into Arrowhead to bounce back from their loss before the bye week.

With just under one and a half minutes of play on the clock, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was adjudged offside. The officials pulled back the play, which could have given the Chiefs the upper hand in the tie. But the refs rained on their parade.

Mahomes was visibly upset with the decision shortly after the play, smashing his helmet on the ground in the Kansas City Chiefs dugout. After the game wrapped up and it was time for the post-game press conference, the 28-year-old made his stand clear on what he thought about the crucial offside call on Toney. He recognized that his receiver was ‘barely’ over the line, but “it’s a tough pill to swallow.”

To take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game. They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something. I've never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn't a warning the entire game.

Andy Reid agreed with Patrick Mahomes on the Toney offside call

The Chiefs are on the path of a three-peat, thus winning games like the Bills, who are a contender, matters the most. A loss, as Mahomes said, is hard to digest, but to head coach Andy Reid, the offside call was “embarrassing.”

The veteran coach told the press after the game that something like that had never happened in his long career in the NFL.

Usually I get a warning before something like that happens. It's a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place. I’ve been in the league for a long time. I haven't had one like that.

Referee Carl Cheffers clarified the Toney offside call to Chiefs beat reporter Matt Derrick that, if the player was egregiously offside, it’s beyond getting a warning. So according to Cheffers, the officials did the right thing and called the play back instead of giving Reid or Patrick Mahomes any warning.

This loss leaves the Chiefs with 8 wins and 5 defeats in 2023. They sit first in the AFC West, but the Denver Broncos are slowly creeping up behind them. The Broncos now have seven wins after securing a dominating 24-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers last night.
