The Kansas City Chiefs created a much-needed salary cap stretch ahead of the 2024 offseason as they released wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling

The reigning Super Bowl champion faced a lot of heat in the regular season for their dropped passes, given they lacked good backing by a wide receiver. But releasing Valdes-Scantling may backfire next season if they aspire to be the first team in the NFL to win three back-to-back Super Bowl trophies.

A source close to The Associated Press tipped the media outlet of the breaking news but on the condition of obscurity as the franchise is yet to announce the release of Valdes-Scantling officially. The receiver’s departure creates a $12 million space in their salary cap, which in addition to the increased $30 million would aid the Chiefs in solidifying its offense and satisfy star players like Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed for next season.

The Chiefs signed Valdes-Scantling in a three-year contract worth $30 million, in the hope of transforming him into a deep threat under the guidance of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, back in 2022. Although he played a role in bringing home two Super Bowl trophies, he disappointed the team in terms of numbers expected.

In his two seasons with Kansas City, the former Green Bay Packers receiver logged 63 catches for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns. And with two of its top defensive players, Sneed and Jones likely heading into free agency, the Chiefs desperately need to take action or rather say satisfy their demands to establish themselves as a dynasty.

Fan reaction on the Chiefs releasing Marquez Valdes-Scantling

The Chiefs’ decision to release Valdes-Scantling seems to have triggered a mixed reaction from the fans. When some argue the receiver is one of their strongest players in an underachieved receiving group, many believe his departure was foreseen because of a lack of production.

There’s no denying the contributions of the wideout in his team’s back-to-back Super Bowl wins, there is also no denying he lagged in putting up the numbers they needed. He also logged numerous dropped passes throughout the regular season.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Even after the Super Bowl winning catch??? Cold world” while another wrote, “Bye bye, good riddance #ChiefsKingdom.” Here are some of the reactions:

Some fans predicted his next landing spot to be the Minnesota Vikings or Dallas Cowboys. It is to be seen how things pan out in the next season.
