Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay has fired shots at the New York Jets offense ahead of their clash on Sunday. Although he didn’t mention Zach Wilson‘s name directly, his words were directed toward the Jets quarterback.
What was supposed to be a blockbuster matchup between the two sides after Aaron Rodgers‘ addition, his sudden Achilles tear has reduced the excitement to a mere stepping block for Andy Reid‘s team. They look to carry forward the 41-10 momentum from the Week 3 game against the Bears at MetLife Stadium.
The media wanted the Chiefs’ players’ opinions on their next opponents. They asked Gay about whether he saw any of Zach Wilson‘s tapes from this season. His reply was snarky, to say the least. “Damn, that was a hard question,” Gay responded to the inquiry. “A team that wants to run the ball. That wasn’t meant to be funny or anything. But Aaron Rodgers got hurt, and it turned into team panic mode. That’s what I see, at least.”
The Rodgers-less Jets lost both games in the following weeks, and fans were restless watching Wilson’s botch every time. As per Pro Football Reference, the 24-year-old completed just 44 of 84 passes (52.4 percent rate) for two touchdowns, four interceptions, and 467 yards in three games and ranks last in the NFL in quarterback rating. “They’ve got great running backs,” Gay added. “So know they’re just trying to pound it, pound and ground.”
Willie Gay is correct about Zach Wilson and New York Jets’ condition
The New York Jets have one of the best, if not the best, running back cores in the game. Second-year player Breece Hall is a force to be reckoned with, and on top of that, they added Dalvin Cook for extra depth. But neither boasts a significant contribution this season. Hall only managed 26 carries for 154 yards in three games, whereas Cook only featured on the opening day.
However, they are only good as quarterbacks. If the pillar is not strong enough, the entire building will collapse. Michael Carter‘s outburst on the sidelines during the Patriots game clearly indicated that not everything was right in the Gang Green locker room. Still, head coach Robert Saleh remained adamant that Wilson was the undisputed QB 1.
There were cries for a new, experienced signal caller to replace the former first-round pick. Former quarterback and longtime Jets fan Joe Namath demanded Saleh remove Zach Wilson from the starting lineup. They have addressed those pleas by signing veteran Trevor Siemian to the practice squad.
