The NFL Hall of Fame needs no particular introduction. A place where every football player hopes of getting inducted after being drafted into the National Football League. It is considered one of the biggest honors for footballers, especially after they have dedicated a major portion of their mortal lives towards the sport.
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is a big candidate to be possibly inducted into the esteemed Hall of Fame when he retires from the sport. Up until the 2022/23 season, there was very little doubt about his induction, but one failed season and people have started questioning his credibility both in the league and as a possible Hall of Famer.
Wilson’s first season with the Broncos following his trade from the Seattle Seahawks was a huge disappointment. They failed to make it into the playoffs finishing fourth in the AFC West division with a horrendous 5-12 record. However, former NFL DE turned analyst, Chris Canty believes that Wilson should not be judged solely on the basis of the last season.
Chris Canty rallied for Russell Wilson’s inclusion into Hall of Fame despite quarterback’s disastrous 2022/23 season
Chris Canty argued that Wilson has already done enough to get himself inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame, hailing him as one of the best quarterbacks in the league over the past decade. Canty backed up his opinion by comparing his career touchdown passes in which he ranks third behind legendary quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.
“Oh yeah, Russell has done enough to be a Hall of Famer, now you wouldn’t know it based on the way he played last year, but since Russell Wilson has come into the league, he’s third in touchdown passing behind only Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. And he’s second in wins behind only Tom Brady. Now I get that wins is not a quarterback stat but a former defensive player, I can tell you, in this league if you don’t have a quarterback, it’s damn hard to win,” Chris Canty started off on ESPN’s First Take show when asked about Wilson’s chances of getting into the Hall of Fame.
“Russell Wilson does a lot of it. He’s 9 wins in the postseason to only 7 losses and you’re talking about a guy that’s been in the postseason for 8 of the 11 years he’s been starting quarterback in the National Football League. So let’s not take the bad taste from last year and conflate whether or not Russell Wilson has done enough over the course of his career to be a Hall of Famer. You can’t look back at the last decade of football and talk about it without talking about Russell Wilson.”
Hailed as one of the NFL’s best running quarterbacks of all time, Wilson also has a decent record in the postseason, which when coupled with his Super Bowl success in 2015 makes up an impressive resume. However, the quarterback needs to ensure that puts up formidable performances in the upcoming seasons, failing which might snatch away his chances.
