The Kansas City Chiefs won their final game of the season and ended their season with a record of 11-6. It was a meaningless game for the Chiefs as they booked their ticket to the playoffs after a week 17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. As a result of that, most of the Chiefs’ starters were resting against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. One starter who played the game though, was DT Chris Jones.
Jones is the Chiefs’ best defenseman. He has been a phenomenal player for them and was a huge part of their two recent Super Bowl wins. Jones, however, played the game because he needed a sack to earn a $1.25 million sack bonus.
The superstar DT was supposed to play only one quarter, but he failed to get the required sack in the first half. To HC Andy Reid‘s credit, he gave Jones another opportunity in the second half, and the defenseman did not disappoint.
Huge celebrations ensued after the sack. Jones later revealed that the celebrations might have also been for the fact that the DT had promised Rolex watches to his fellow defensive linemen. Jones lived up to his promise as well, as he gifted his teammates Rolex watches after the game.
Jones said after the game:
The whole [defensive line] gets a Rolex. [Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] gets a Rolex, the coaches get a Rolex because I think it takes a collective [effort] in order to reach those types of goals.Chris Jones after the game
Jones ended the regular season with 10.5 sacks and 20 solo tackles. He and the Chiefs will hope to have a better postseason and repeat as Super Bowl champions. The Chiefs will take on the Miami Dolphins in their Wild Card round matchup on Saturday at the Arrowhead Stadium.
Andy Reid sheds light on the decision keep Chris Jones in the game against the Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs rested their big guns on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. However, DT Chris Jones needed a sack to receive a $1.25 million sack bonus. HC Andy Reid permitted Jones to play the first quarter, but the DT failed to secure a sack in the first half. Reid though, gave his defenseman another chance in the third quarter and that was enough for Jones to get a sack.
Reid talked about his decision to play Jones in the third quarter. Reid said:
He wanted the opportunity, so I gave him the opportunity to start off with third downs and then as it went on, he played a couple first and second downs. He wanted to get that done. [The $1.25 million], that's a couple cheeseburgers right there.Andy Reid to the media
The Chiefs won the game and improved to 11-6. They will play the Miami Dolphins at home in the Wild Card round on Saturday and will hope to make a Super Bowl run this season as well.
