With the 2023 season just a few months away, fans and pundits have already begun to make predictions for Super Bowl favorites, MVPs, and other awards. Players often avoid making such assumptions because they do not want to fall flat on their faces. However, Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has made one such prediction.

Chris Jones sent out a tweet on Thursday morning, saying, “I’ll win DPOY this year.” Jones sounds extremely confident as he seems to have his eyes set on the AP Defensive Player of the Year award. The 28-year-old has been close several times to winning the coveted award but is yet to win one.

Last year, Jones finished third in DPOY voting after posting a 15.5 sacks season for the Super Bowl LVII champions. There is no doubt that Jones has been the defensive anchorman for the Chiefs; however, he hasn’t been able to get his hands on the DPOY trophy. History is also standing in his way of claiming the DPOY honors, as no Kansas City Chiefs player has ever won this award.

Chris Jones was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. He has been with the team ever since and has won 2x Super Bowl rings during his time. He has expressed his desire to play his entire career in Kansas City. He is currently in his final year of a four-year $80 million contract which was signed back in 2020.

There are a lot of rumors suggesting that Chris Jones might leave the Chiefs, and there is also one narrative floating around that he will join their rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals. However, Chiefs GM Brett Veach said that he is confident in getting back the 4x Pro Bowl defensive tackle since there is a lot of time left for negotiations.

During the Chiefs’ Super Bowl ring presentation, Veach said,“We have great communication and there’s a lot of time before camp…I’m sure we’ll have great dialogue from now to the start of training camp and look forward to Chris being here not just for next year, but for a long time…we have a long history together and we have a great relationship with his agent. I mean, these things usually get worked out right before [or] right during the first start of camp so we anticipate the same, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Chris Jones had a great season in 2022, as he had 44 combined tackle with 15.5 sacks and 4 pass deflections. He emerged as a leader on the gridiron during the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. There is no doubt that the Chiefs would let a player of his caliber slip away.
