Splendid news for Kansas City Chiefs fans: their favorite defensive tackle, Chris Jones, isn’t going anywhere. After weeks of speculation about an extension, the two-time Super Bowl winner is staying put in Kansas City.

The Chiefs went into the 2024 offseason with two priorities. They sorted the first one, franchise-tagging star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. General manager Brett Veach‘s next target was to resolve the contract talks with Chris Jones. On Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 30-year-old had agreed to a five-year extension with the Chiefs.

Chiefs and five-time Pro-Bowl DT Chris Jones reached agreement on a record 5-year deal that includes $95 million guaranteed and allows KC to keep its best defender before free agency begins, per his agents, [@KatzBrosSports]. The deal is expected to be the highest average salary ever given to an NFL defensive tackle.

While the Chiefs are still finalizing the details of the contract, Schefter reported Jones will have $95 guaranteed. This would make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.

Fortunately for the Chiefs fans, they wouldn’t have to witness the repeat of the same from last year. Jones held out for a deal so long that he missed the opening game of the season. He rejoined the team during the Week 2 game, ended up registering 10.5 sacks in 16 regular-season games, and notched an All-Pro nod for the second year in a row. Additionally, he had six quarterback hits en route to a Super Bowl ring.

At the NFL Combine last week, Veach revealed that they were optimistic about striking a new deal with Jones. They were in the last stages of the process with the agents.

We have a great deal of respect for his agents, and, obviously, we have a great deal of respect for Chris. Our goal and intentions were to get something done last year. We weren't able to. We talked about some of the things in how this may all play out, so here we are.

Jones wasn’t the only Chiefs defender receiving a hefty raise in the last few days. On Thursday, linebacker Drue Tranquill also bagged a three-year, $19 million deal, with $13 million guaranteed. 

These deals will definitely help keep the core of the Chiefs squad together. Veach has managed to keep the frontlines, which also consist of Charles Omeniheu and George Karlaftis, along with linebacker Nick Bolton, besides Jones, together.
