The San Francisco 49ers managed to snap their three-game losing streak on Sunday night by winning against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team has managed to fare pretty well this season having won 6 out of 9 games and they are sitting atop their division. The team has gotten a blessing in the form of Brock Purdy who has quickly established himself to be worthy of being considered their franchise quarterback.
Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey have worked great together. However, when the running back first arrived from Carolina last season, he did not really know who Purdy was, his first impression of the young QB was that he was indeed an irrelevant personality and one who was probably not going to stick around for long.
In a story via The Athletic, Christian McCaffrey was quoted saying,
To be honest, I wasn't 100 percent focused on who this guy (Brock Purdy) even was.
This was just around the time that Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance were no longer solid options for the 49ers due to their injuries. The team had to revert to Brock Purdy and from that point on, it has been nothing short of a wonderful journey.
Christian McCaffrey was just worried about himself and did not take Brock Purdy seriously
Christian McCaffrey addressed his first interaction with Brock Purdy and said:
This guy could've been anyone. I was just so dialed in on trying to learn the plays.
The running back did get traded in the middle of the season and attempting to learn an entirely new offensive playbook, that too designed by Kyle Shanahan, in that short a span is nothing less than a challenge in itself.
Well, fast forward to 2023, not just Christian McCaffrey but the entire NFL knows who Brock Purdy is. He may carry the Mr. Irrelevant tag but he has had a key role to play in making the 49ers relevant and competitive all season long.
The Brock Purdy story is and will continue to be inspiring, his story is almost Tom Brady-esque. They both have had similar beginnings in the NFL while Brady was picked at 199, Purdy was picked at number 262. There were no expectations from him, he was not even meant to be a starter at any point let alone this soon. The whole 49ers strategy was to make Trey Lance the next face of the franchise but just two years after being drafted, Lance is not even on the team anymore but Purdy is. The San Francisco 49ers will look to get back on a winning streak when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.
