The Kansas City Chiefs have proven that actions speak louder than words. The Cincinnati Bengals were all hyped up after defeating the Buffalo Bills in the divisional playoffs and went on to dub the Arrowhead Stadium as ‘Burrowhead’ given Joe Burrow‘s undefeated 3-0 record against the Chiefs.
Players making fun of and teasing their opponents is all in good faith and it is a part of the sport. But things really escalated when Cincinnati’s Mayor, Aftab Pureval, issued a WHO DEY proclamation before the AFC Championship game to boost the morale of the Bengals players, which was labeled uncalled by everyone.
“Whereas Joseph Lee Burrow, who’s 3-0 against Mahomes, has been asked by officials to take a paternity test to (confirm) whether or not he’s his father…And whereas Kansas City is named after its neighboring state which is, you know, just kind of weird,” Pureval said in his proclamation. He even declared January 29 as “They Gotta Play Us Day” in Cincinnati. This eventually backfired in his face after the AFC game’s conclusion.
Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval wishes good luck to the Chiefs as they head to the Super Bowl
The Chiefs managed to win the close encounter 23-20 in a last-minute thriller thanks to the Bengals for putting them in field goal range. Cincinnati proved to be a “rah-rah” team but didn’t fight back this time as they did in their previous matchups. All of the Chiefs players made sure they gave back a taste of their own medicine to the Bengals players.
Future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce didn’t hold back when he accepted the Lamar Hunt Trophy and reminded all the Chiefs fans who the real winners were. He didn’t forget Mayor Pureval’s comments about his friend and teammate Patrick Mahomes either and had the perfect response of him. “Hey, I’ve got some wise words for that Cincinnati mayor. Know your role and shut your mouth! you Jabroni!,” Kelce said.
Mayor Aftab Pureval took to Twitter and accepted his wrongdoing and apologized for crossing the line. Pureval tweeted: “Yeah. Deserved that. Congrats to KC on a well-fought win, and good luck in Arizona. Proud of our fans and our @bengals for the energy all year. Who Dey!”
Cincinnati fans alleged that the refs were partial to the Chiefs as they missed way too many holds on Burrow and other players. Even the roughing of the passer penalty on Joseph Ossani was uncalled for, as said and proved by Bengals fans.
