Ahead of the much-anticipated divisional round game between the NFC South champions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the NFC North champions Detroit Lions, Tampa’s quarterback Baker Mayfield got into a feud with Detroit’s defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
But, now after the game, the Lions defensive back got the last laugh as he picked off the Buccaneers quarterback, eventually defeating his team in the crucial playoff game. Furthermore, after the game, Gardner-Johnson took to social media to call out Mayfield in an NSFW rant.
That boy said we don’t watch film. And I tossed that b**ch back at you, too. I hope you got it, too. Make sure you send that with the jersey.C.J. Gardner-Johnson said on his Instagram live
Both Mayfield and Gardner-Johnson were involved in back-and-forth trash talks after the Lions’ defensive back insulted the Bucs’ QB. The Lions DB said the Buccaneers have a good wide receiver room, but they would be better with a good quarterback, insinuating Mayfield is holding them back. In his rebuttal, Mayfield called Gardner-Johnson a good player but advised him to watch more films.
Just 4 minutes into the game, the Lions DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson backed his trash talks by picking off a tipped pass from Mayfield. After the play was over, C.J. tossed the ball back to Mayfield while celebrating the interception.
Apart from his 2 interceptions, Mayfield had a good outing on Sunday as he completed 26 of his 41 pass attempts for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, he could not help his team outduel the NFC North champions and suffered a defeat. With that loss, the Bucs have been officially eliminated from the postseason.
Baker Mayfield has earned a right to return to the team, says Todd Bowles
Following their rough loss against the Lions on Sunday, the Buccaneers are out of the playoffs and are now back to the drawing board in the off-season.
Amidst this, the Bucs’ head coach Todd Bowles addressed the media during the post-game press conference, where he was asked whether Mayfield has earned the right to return to the Bucs squad.
Yeah, he most definitely has. Obviously, it's too early to talk about that, and business is business, but Baker had a helluva year. We love him, the guys love him and then we'll see what the future holds.Todd Bowles told reporters
Mayfield had the best year of his career so far as he registered 4,044 passing yards, and 28 passing TDs while completing 64.3% of his passes, all career-high numbers. The Bucs will not find a quarterback in the same pay grade as Mayfield. So, it’s likely they’ll bring him back to the team on a multi-year deal.
