Confidence is one of the critical ingredients of a footballer who aims to make it big in the world of the National Football League. For the upcoming batch of the 2023 draft pick, there lies a huge world of opportunities ahead of them as they enter uncharted territories in their personal lives.
The Arizona Cardinals have drafted a very confident man in the form of Houston Cougars’ quarterback Clayton Tune, as their fifth-round overall pick. Tune, played for five seasons at the Cougars, leading them to the Independence Bowl in 2022 with a 23-16 victory over Louisiana.
Tune took over the role of the starting quarterback at Houston in 2020, when he started all of the games and held his own the subsequent year with strong performances. Over the past five years, Clayton Tune aggregated 11,994 yards and 104 touchdowns with the best of his seasons coming in 2022.
Clayton Tune needs to earn his place at the Arizona Cardinals
Despite his credentials, Tune wasn’t listed as high as some of the other quarterbacks from the 2023 draft class, most of whom were forecasted to be first-round picks or even make the top-10 list. However, that hasn’t deterred Tune from claiming to be the best quarterback in his class.
“I think I’m the best quarterback in this class and God’s got a plan for me, so I wasn’t too stressed about it. I didn’t have too many expectations, but I’m just happy to be a part of such a great organization and be able to live out my dream,” he said. “I’m just happy to go in there to work and compete,” Clayton Tune said during his interaction with the reporters.
Calling himself a natural leader, Clayton Tune went on to claim that he’s happy to have been drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and will look to have a positive impact on the group. However, Tune will have his work cut out to get hold of a spot in the Cardinals’ roster ahead of the 2023/24 season as he faces competition from the likes of Colt McCoy and David Blough.
Kyler Murray will be the undoubted starter for the Cardinals once he returns from action, meaning, which will simply increase pressure on the rookie quarterback.
“If you look at my body of work, the effect that I have on my team that I play on, I elevate everyone around me. I’m a natural leader, people follow me and see the work that I’m putting in and the mindset that I have, and they want to follow suit. I have that no flinch mentality when things get going tough. Those are some of the intangible’s things, and then being able to make every throw on the field, being able to make plays off schedule and be more mobile than people realize,” Tune said.
Clayton Tune also carries with him a piece of history for the Arizona Cardinals. Tune’s great-great uncle, Jim Lawrence, was the first-ever draft pick made by the then-Chicago Cardinals way back in 1936.
