The United States Football league recently concluded its inaugural season of which the Birmingham Stallions came out on top and won it all. Apart from giving a reason to Birmingham, Alabama to celebrate, the USFL also proved something else. That the NFL no longer holds the monopoly when it comes to football, there is room for improvement and other leagues can all co-exist with the NFL.
Apart from the USFL, there are other leagues such as the Fan Controlled Football league and the XFL, owned and operated by Dwayne Johnson which is set to hold its inaugural season in 2023. The Fan Controlled league has also been largely successful but that was attributed to the fact that fans had a say in what teams did and which players were selected. The XFL should be looking at the success of the USFL and be happy and reassured that it will have a solid viewership.

“Plenty of room for an 8-10 week spring football league”: Colin Cowherd believes there is a lot of scope for non-NFL leagues to thrive

Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd sounded off on the success of the USFL in its debut season, he believes that this is just the start of something big in the world of football and it is a positive for fans and players alike. Not only do these leagues offer an important opportunity to players who may not be able to get into colleges or have gone undrafted to prove their worth but also be able to sustain themselves financially.
“USFL first season a success, the USFL made money from both the networks, the ratings beat hocket and baseball, 100-year sports with history regularly. The quality was pretty good and Fox and NBC are both committed to it next year,” Colin believes that this league will continue to grow in size and fanbase.
Addressing the issue of the stands not being packed enough with fans, Colin cites the reasoning behind this, “It was played in one stadium in one small town. That was not the goal. The goal for the USFL was profit, ratings, and quality on television. This league is going to make their money in television ratings which were incredibly encouraging and they’re also potentially going to make their money in having a relationship with a gambling company down the road. Both FOX and NBS see it as a hit and there is PLENTY of room for an 8-10 week spring football league in America,” Colin adds that the XFL would have succeeded if the pandemic had not struck as that came before the USFL but was postponed due to the virus.
“The league before this, the XFL, had the pandemic not struck would have survived. So USFL was absolutely a hit,” Colin concludes. The XFL will surely do well now that a name as big as Dwayne Johnson is not only associated with it but he owns and operates it. But the main reason that a spring football league is successful is that football fans dread this gap between the Super Bowl and the start of pre-season. Though players look forward to this we fans cannot live without football for such long periods!
