Colin Cowherd has stern advice for New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. According to the veteran analyst, Rodgers should not be focusing on training his successor Zach Wilson.
“Do you think that it’s the quarterback’s job to get his replacement ready? I do not,“ Cowherd said in the latest segment of FOX Sports 1 The Herd. He was pointing his finger toward the newcomer, who played the first preseason Hall of Fame game against the Cleveland Browns in place of the 39-year-old.
Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft for the Jets, has yet to make a positive mark. To bolster the squad, they added Aaron Rodgers in the offseason as their main signal-caller. The Super Bowl winner is in the twilight of his career, looking for one last glory with the Big Apple franchise. Some even speculate that the Pro Bowler was brought in as a mentor for Wilson. However, Cowherd believes it’s the coach’s job to train their players.
“It’s the coach’s job to build a culture,” Cowherd claimed. “I don’t think it’s Aaron Rodgers’ job to get Zach Wilson or Jordan Love ready to replace him.”
The Green Bay Packers did intend for Love to be guided by a Super Bowl MVP quarterback. They were probably thinking along the lines of Brett Favre being Aaron Rodgers’ mentor. It’s possible that Jets head coach Robert Saleh had the same epiphany with his rookie quarterback.
Wilson did have a good run on Friday, despite some slip-ups. He threw a 57-yard pass down the left field for Malik Taylor, who grabbed an amazing running catch. Unfortunately, he could not save the Jets from losing the game, 21-16.

Colin Cowherd advises the Jets to trade Zach Wilson before the season’s opener
As the 2023 NFL season comes ever closer, the teams are starting to take shape, with some nibbles here and there. Like the Cincinnati Bengals losing their starting quarterback Joe Burrow to an injury. Cowherd predicts there will be several openings before the trade deadline, and someone might come for Zach Wilson.
“You are looking to salvage the pick now with Zach Wilson,” he claimed. “What you [New York Jets] do is show him off now. He looked at ease with backups around him. Remember, the trading deadline this year for the NFL will be bananas. Four or five teams are going to be tanking.”
Wilson, before joining the Jets, was part of the BYU college football team. In 30 games, he recorded 7,652 passing and 693 rushing yards with 56 and 15 touchdowns, respectively.
