Colin Cowherd rips Baker Mayfield apart and DEMANDS his retirement if he can’t beat Kyle Trask at Bucs for QB1 job
Analyst Colin Cowherd believes that Baker Mayfield may need to consider taking a job in the media, if he is unable to perform this season.

Baker Mayfield has gotten yet another opportunity to redeem himself, this time it is on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that is attempting to reinvent itself following the departure of Tom Brady. While Tampa Bay is not a bad team by any stretch, as it still has Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on offense and key players on the defensive front, they will have a tough time this season as they are yet to finalize who the team’s starting QB will be.
The battle for the starter’s role is between Baker Mayfield, the former No. 1 draft pick of the Cleveland Browns who was first traded to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for essentially a pack of peanuts before signing with the Tampa Bay Bucs for one year with a deal that is estimated to be valued at $8.5 million. This is Baker Mayfield’s last dance unless the quarterback can perform and prove to the league that he is indeed worthy of being a starter in the NFL. Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd gave Baker Mayfield a brutal reality check on the situation he is in right now.
“Baker is too big to be a backup, so if he loses to Kyle Trask, he’s still got a chip on his shoulder a mile long. Last week, he was quoted saying in front of a camera, ‘I don’t need anybody to tell me how to play quarterback. ‘ It’s who he is. He’s making $4 million a year but to be a top analyst at a football network, you’d make about 2, 2.5 million.” Colin is very skeptical about Baker Mayfield landing the starter’s role at Tampa, which is why he is suggesting alternative career options for the QB.

Colin goes on to add, “The truth is, you don’t want to become a punchline. If Baker plays for two or three more years, and this year starts and goes 1-8 and gets hurt…he’s led the NFL in interceptions since he entered the league. If he went 0-6 this year and that means he went 2-14 in his last 16 NFL starts, he becomes a complete utter punchline. i’m dead serious, I would say if you could not beat Kyle, I would retire, I would call the networks, take a year off, practice, go to these companies, say ‘I want to get good at this’ and go be a rockstar.”
There is no way Baker Mayfield is even allowing the thought of retiring from the NFL to loom in his head. If anything, he understands the gravity of the situation and how this is essentially his last chance to be a starter in the NFL.
Baker will need to put in a lot of work and first, he needs to convince HC Todd Bowles that he is the right man for the job. All eyes will be on him as Mayfield has been criticized for being inconsistent and allowing for more interceptions than touchdowns. Hopefully, the quarterback is able to have the best season of his career but only time will tell how things will unfold.
